A little help if you please

    Not sure where to put this one but oh well: I am a preacher. I am working on a sermon right now about the cross. If you must know the title it is called "Glory and Shame of the Cross" the text comes from Galatians 6:14 and Matthew 16:24. Basic truth in the message is though the cross is something we should look to as God expressing His love towards us, The cross is a sign of shame, rejection and death. I don't know how you believe on the forming of sermons or whatever I don't really want to debate that one.
    I need some information though. I'm doing research on crucifixion and the cross. If I am able to, I'd like to build a life size cross, that weighs at least 100 pounds to drag across the platform (i bet someone won't like that one...i'm thinking of how to minimize damage) I'm still working on the details of it all, the main thing I'm asking for though is information on the dimensions (height, size of posts and width mainly) I've found one article that suggests 7 feet tall but that's about all I've gotten so far. please E-mail me the info: [Moderator's Note: Please use the BB Private Message system to contact this poster.     Why in the world would you want to do something like that? Particularly if it will cause damage. Are you going for some kind of dramatic effect? Isn't the word sufficient?

    I'm all for dramatic illustrations...once when talking about Ebenezer from 1 Samuel I had a several hundred pound stone pillar...creative visuals connect with the congregations of the 21st century and solidify biblical principles.

    You're not going to find a concensus opinion on the size of the cross or how it was made or anything like that. I'd suggest making one that fits your specifications and use that.

    We did this one Easter in a church plant I served with and made a twenty foot tall cross out of unfinished (i.e. just chopped down) mesquite trees. Our pastor used throughout the message and the following week we hung in the the worship center. Really tied some things together.

    Personally don't make something so big it'll kill ya or you can't manage it. That will do more harm than good. Check into some foam or lighterweight materials (like they use in movies and set design) which looks authentic from ten or so feet away but is very managable for you.

    Just a suggestion. I think you're on the right track.

    A wheel on the bottom of the cross won't cause the damage....
    Just a hint.

    I would guess it was bigger than 7 feet tall... especially when you count in portion that had to be put in the hole in the ground... I would guess it was at least 10 feet tall. (3 feet underground)
    But this is just a guess.

    And nothing wrong with visual helps.. some learn that way.

    Yeah, thanks for the advice. I would assume it would be bigger than 7 feet. That's one reason I questioned the height from that source. Personally I believe in a sermon we must nail the truth down. The Bible is suffecient but even Christ used illustrations to make a point. The point here is that the Christian walk is not an easy one as we would make it. It is a path of shame, rejection and loss.
