I had started a thread about the proper way to meet the Pope.

Some have stated they would never bow to a man. This would be typical American thinking since that little skirmish we had back in 1776.

So here is my questions to those of the UK / BC - If you met the Queen of the UK (or her successor) :

Would you follow proper Royal protocol - especially bowing - even a neck bow, courtesy, ect?

Do you see following these traditions/ courtesies as dishonoring the Lord Jesus Christ?

As a Catholic I would kneel on my left knee and kiss his ring of office. The respect aspect is more for the office rather than the man.

One of the pope's titles is "The servant of the servants of God".

In church when I genuflect it is on the right knee.....there is some history to this but I do not know what it is.

When I genuflect to anyone, it is a nod of the head. Never bend the knees.

With the pope, I might shake hand, but never bow or kiss a ring. I remember the saying in England, "An ape was never such an ape, as when he wore a papal cape.." C.H. Spurgeon. This was a response to all the CofE clergy who were copying evangelical preaching in 1800's.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Jim, I just had to look up " genuflect "
Interesting, the page shows a picture of a Navy Captain as he genuflects to former First Lady Nancy Regan.

According to the Wiki article, genuflecting is simply a form of deep respect.

For those of us who are or were military realize that a military hand salute shows respect to a senior officer.

So - is there a difference between kneeling and saluting? Hmmmmm

I wouldn't kiss his ring, hand, or any other part of the anatomy.

Just curious, what part of the British Commonwealth do you hail from.

In the British and Canadian military, a military person does not salute without a cap on. Without a cap, he just stands at attention...respect is what it is. We respect the badge and what it stands for.

    Cheers,

    Jim
