In another section, there was a poll on who is right-handed or left-handed. This prompted me to start a thread here about problems left-handers have living in a right-hander's world. Let's list and describe the problems we left-handers have.

    1. Scissors - I have had to use right-handed scissors all my life. Where can I buy left-handed scissors.

    2. Buttons on clothing - On men's clothing, it is very difficult to button buttons with your left hand. If you men doubt this, try it.

BTW, buttons on men's clothes are made for right-handers because when buttons were first introduced, men dressed themselves. On the other hand (pun intended), womens buttons are on the other side. This is because when buttons were first introduced, only rich women had buttons who were dressed by servants. This allowed the servants to use their right hand for buttoning the women's dresses.

    3. Zippers - Men, try going to the bathroom using only your left hand.

I am sure there are many more. Let's see how many we can list.

My daughter is left-handed and in the medical field. She was told the lab had trouble reading her lab reports correctly because of the reverse slant. She had to learn to slant her writing in opposite direction for safety's sake in the lab. An incorrect reading could affect a person's life medically.

On left-handed scissors, Jo had to learn to use regular scissors early on, but we did find her a pair. To-day they have ambidextrous scissors.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I guess being left-handed doesn't pose any real problems for me. Actually, I use my right one for almost everything except writing, and if my hands are full, I use my right one for that too if I'm signing something.

Although I do have to turn scissors upside down when I use my right hand. No problem with the left, I hold them normal then. I read maps upside down too though, and don't have a problem reading books printed back to front.

Guess I'm easily adaptable. :) The only thing that does bug me is spiral notebooks, but I solve that by starting on the backside of the page, unless I'm writing it for someone else because they get confused by that. LOL
