In context, what he says makes sense. Taking words out of context, of course, makes it sound like what it isn't.

I'm sorry, but I read the context and can't figure how the context makes this heretical statement any better.

Rick Warren is an ear-tickler. However in reading this link I think some of what he said was in fact taken out of context. That is generally what happens when a person tries to make a point based on one or two quotes.

I did really like this quote from him, which I think hits the nail on the head:

Rick Warren describe Fundamentalist Christians as "those that stopped listening....it is an attitude that doesn't want to listen to anybody else."

I think that is very accurate unfortunately. There are problems on the liberal left of Christianity and there are problems on the fundamentalist right in Christianity. Neither of which uses the Bible as it's guide. The left uses whatever feels good at the time, while the right uses well this is what we've always done and what we have always believed (tradition). BOTH are incorrect if they do not line up with Scripture.

So where does your view line up with scripture? If it is a centrist, neither right nor left, view give it up.

My view is read the Bible and believe what it says. It's not left, right or centrist.

Europe and Manhattan is hyperbole but close to accurate. His point about religious pluralism is spot on and something that I would consider most Americans to agree with considering that religious pluralism was the primary motivation of the first amendment of the U.S. constitution.

My understanding of the phrase "religious pluralism" is peaceful co-existence of mutliple religions. Others may have different understandings of the phrase.

I don't know about Manhattan, but here in Europe Secularism is certainly not "quite small". (Incidentally, why is Manhattan singled out? Is there not plenty of secularism in places like Las Vegas and Los Angeles?)

When you have to snatch out bits and pieces, out of context, to try and prove someone is a bad guy christian, then you have a problem. If you want to prove someone is a bad guy christian, it should be an over all teaching system of that person, take Hinn ( or others of his type) for example. You don't need to take anything out of context to prove he (they) is bad.

Big problem with the article is it snatches this one line out of his speech and leaves us with no real idea what he could have possibly meant. Leaving some to guess using their own personal biases, based on no real fact.

Did you really read that article and consider if it had any truth.

    "He joked"!

"Rev. Rick Warren, the founder and leader of a nondenominational megachurch" is wrong. It is a SBC church.

"Warren, the senior pastor of the 100,000-person..." Wrong! It is not 100,000.

“Secularism is quite small outside Europe and Manhattan,” he joked. “The future of the world lies in religious pluralism.”

People who spew about Warren by ripping his remarks and ministry (the greatest single-church missionary effort - Rwanda - in history) make me sick.

Why not grow up a bit. :BangHead:
