A good place to start for where the nation of Iraq came from: Seven Pillars

Unfortunately, the boundaries are really rather arbitrary and do not distinguish between the various people-groups but instead are based primarily on French and British (and even some American) colonial interests in the area.

 

I have often thought that the best thing we could do is just divide Iraq into three individual states or countries and let 'em have at it. Whether or not they wanted to be combined under one central government could be left to them. They could either learn to live together or kill each other off.

But What do I know?

The South for the Shias, center for Sunnmis and north for Kurds

The capital city could be a city state shared by all.

Amen! They have been killing each other for hundreds of years. Why do we think that will stop because they can vote for a president that the other half hate?

Now that insurgents (so called?) are killing their own Iraqi soldiers, I think this is nothing but quicksand and we will eventually have to pull out like we did in Viet Nam -- only for different reasons.

Anybody who will commit suicide to kill people is almost impossible to stop. The only way to stop it might be to offer the suicide bombers 73 virgins here on earth in exchange for bombing.

I certainly don't know the answer to the problem, and I don't think anybody in the government does either.

The only thing they (all the Iraqi's and insurgents) agree on is the fate of Israel.
