Joshua 24:2 says that Terah and other early people of the area were idolators. Now, whom or what did they worship? My pastor said once, and he gave some pretty credible information that I can't remember, that they were "moon-worshippers".
Who was the first Jew? Well, this is tricky.
Abraham was a Hebrew (descendant of Eber) and a Shemite.
Isaac was a Hebrew and a Shemite.
Jacob, later named Israel, was Hebrew and a Shemite.
Jacob's children were Hebrews and Shemites and they were Israelites.
Jacob's son, Judah, is where some claim the word "Jew" came from. If that is so, then the children of Judah were the first "Jews". The other descendants of the other tribes and half-tribes have been called Jews simply by association.
So, following that reasoning, (if you can follow my crazy thinking), then:

Neither Abraham OR Moses would have been called "a Jew"
"Jew" is a term that refers to the southern kingdom "Judah" after the destruction of the northern kingdom.
Prior to that the term would be "Israelite".
I thought 'Hebrew' meant from beyond the river, but interesting piece of info I will have to look up.
Of course, it would make Ishmaelites and Edomites (and what about Midian and Amalek) Hebrews as well.
Laban swore by the G/god of a common ancestor when he made a covenant with Jacob. It is possible that they worshipped God and false gods as well like the imported Samaritans did after the lion incidents.
