I assume alot of people here know of the westboro church practices in ranting and raving at funerals and yelling out things like "God hates F*#S."
    ---

    You be the judge here.

the ACLU is apparently supporting the westboro baptists in their rants at military funerals where the westboro's yell things like "we're glad your dead!"
from what i hear that's the kind of stuff they say.

you be the judge - should the westboro baptists be allowed to do that? (they have a 300 ft. rule to abide by i believe)

or should they not be allowed to?
    ---

taking into account that they do have a freedom of speech. and they'd probably resort to the american First Ammendment.

also - if the government gets in this - and stops the westboro's speech -

then who's next that the government stops? - could it be that those who talk of sin and repentance and "law before grace" be ousted next?
    ---

you be the judge - should they be allowed to speak like that?

    or should they be stopped?

and how far could this go if they are stopped?

The FCC limits what can be said on the air waves. Free speech is not a right to use whatever language one wants and cause damage to another by gossip or slander, etc.

Free speech does not allow for someone to be harassed.

I don't understand the title of this thread. If the ACLU is supporting the Westboro church (?) who is against them? I suppose there's some kind of suit but I doubt it's being brought by "Christianity."

If we are going to allow the KKK to have public paraids and speaches then I do not think there is anything they can do about westboro.

I would like to see the police turn there heads and not be looking at one of the funerals or maybe they could be busy on the other end of town.

Yep - there should be a 1,000 foot distance. IMHO.

    PS

When someone dies from their cult of personality, someone should take speakers and drown out their heresy with a true sermon of the Gospel. Maybe some of them would come to Christ.

    NEW WORD ALERT!

"Obsanities" (ob-SAN-it-ees) n. Cursing by crazy people.

    SOURCE: RBell's frontal lobe.

I understood what you meant, LeBuick, but it was still a hoot.

Their reasoning is that God is punishing America, for allowing the gays to be gay, by killing its solders in Iraq.

The words, mentaly ill, come to mind.

This kind of thought is kind of scarry though. Even though I would not shed a tear if the Westboro crazies were shut up. I know it could be extended to other types of speech. How many people would consider witnessing on a street corner as harassment.

Westboro would not fall under slander laws. They are voiceing their opinion about why troops are being killed and letting us know their feeling about that.

Maybe those speakers should be set up in front of their church every sunday. Somehow there should be news stories about how normal baptists oppose these so called baptists. I am tired of telling people that they do not reprisent what I believe in anyway.

i dont think this would be a very good idea.

i mean - the media would be all over it saying something like:

    "Christians opposing Christians"

and that would give us a bad rap more then we got already...

You've hit the nail on the head. The problem is that you have a group that no one outside the group really thinks they should be doing what they are doing. However, if you open the can of worms that stops these morons, pretty soon you're eating nightcrawler soup.

Although I do agree that God hates sodomites, I DO NOT believe in ANYTHING else they preach against and that SHOULD NOT be allowed.

These demonstrators exhibit hateful, obnoxious, disgusting behavior. The best thing the media could do would be to identify them as a cult, following a misguided leader, rather than as "Christian protesters." One doesn't have to resort to their behavior / words / signs to protest the war against terrorism.
