Adult Sunday school material...suggestions?

RBP is probably the best SS material available in a prepackaged form. If you are not satisfied with that get a book on a doctrine, subject, or Bible book and make up your own, or start from scratch and write your own material.

 

How about a study of Apologetics or a study of eschatology you can spend a whole year in an eschatology curriculum and a couple of years if you take time to study all four views of eschatoligy.

 

I know this is not going to be well recieved by many, but have you ever thought about using the Bible? I find that it provides quite a challenge and an actual learning experience for adults, and then some.

For our adults we use Gospel Union and BaptistWay Press

 

During the years that I taught the Young Adults Sunday school class I learned that the students in my class had individual needs that were not addressed in the Sunday school material provided by the church, so I created my own curriculum based on the NASB and the Greek text of the New Testament and addressed the issues that were of concern to the individuals in my class. The students enjoyed that methodology, but the pastor was teaching the Adult Sunday school class and his students began to drop out of his class and come into mine. Fortunately the Pastor didn’t have a problem with pride and was pleased to see his flock being ministered to in manner that met their needs.

One approach I have been taking lately is going through a published book. I use that as the basis for the lesson, and have prepared study guides, a memory verse for each week, and so on.

That is one of the keys of Sunday School that seems to be negelected, in my experience- the idea that it is to be like school. If the students want to learn, they should be expected to prepare and learn at times other than Sunday morning.

 

Why not work your way thru' the Gospels with Tom Wright's series: Matthew for Everyone,
Mark for Everyone etc.

We are finding them very interesting and informative. Tom Wright is now the Bishop of Durham and is a popular author over here.

I agree with Circuitrider. We have used some very good RBP materials for adult classes. You probably want to expand on it in some areas, but it is a great starting point for some good discussion.

The direction that a curriculum provides can be helpful, but you should be spending plenty of time making it your own. In our class, you can't get away with just reading the teacher's guide, you had better be ready because some of the questions and comments go pretty deep.

We are right now using a series from RBP on the Baptist Distinctives, and now moving into a short series on Biblical Apologetics. We do have several new believers in our class, and we have a large variety in our class of people who have grown up in church, and those who have been saved more recently in life. We are all young adults, so perhaps your classes need more of a challenge.

If you want a less structured approach, many topical books have study guides associated with them, that would provide a little guidance, and you could choose the topic more freely. Just taking a verse by verse approach to studying a particular book of the Bible works well too.
