Growing international pressure on Afghanistan to respect the religious freedom of a Christian convert was met in Afghanistan on Friday by calls for the man to be executed for denying Islam. See the rest of the story via the link below. :(

There appears to be an effort afoot to release Rahman if they can find some face-saving solution. The backlash likely will not be pretty.

I saw this in an AP report:

Do they really think Almighty God can be humiliated like a mortal man?

My understanding (which may be faulty) is that it is not illegal to be a Christian, but it is illegal to convert from Islam.

    Hillclimber,
It seems that since the United States brought this government to power following 9/11 and ousted the Taliban, that America should have had great influence in allowing the protection of all faiths in the new constitiution as we have in this country and as we have in Iraq. This situation is outrageous.

I just pray he and any other believers there will be blessed with strength to endure and truly give our Lord and Savior glory. Maybe they can convert a few more people! It's an unfortunate situatuion, but God works in strange ways. His Will be done.

That is tehcnically correct, but largely irrelevant. It means that anyone born into a Muslim family cannot adopt any other religion.

The U.S. State Department in 2005 reported that 99 percent of the population is Muslim, most of the religious minorities having left the country during the Taliban regime.

Outrageous, yes, but not unexpected. The Karzai regime is walking on egg shells with this one; he certainly doesn't want to alienate the West, but it must be remembered that Talibanesque Islam was not without popular support in Afghanistan.

" 'The Quran is very clear and the words of our prophet are very clear. There can only be one outcome: death,' said cleric Khoja Ahmad Sediqi, who is also a member of the Supreme Court. 'If Karzai releases him, it will play into the hands of our enemy and there could be an uprising.' " (Source: The Associated Press)

Afghanistan is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states:

"1. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This right shall include freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice, and freedom, either individually or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in worship, observance, practice and teaching.

    2. No one shall be subject to coercion which would impair his freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice."

Afghanistan should live up to its treaty obligations. But then, so should other countries in which true religious liberty is denied. But asking for that would step on toes in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim states the U.S. doesn't particularly want to offend.

Maybe the Danes can help us out with this one.

God has never been, nor will He ever be, humiliated. If He could be humiliated, then He wouldn't be God.

If a Muslim thinks that He can be, then he believes in a false god.

I heard tonight the courts may declare he is insane and let him go. He will have to leave the country quickly so he won't be tried by "public lynching."

Well, I've maintained for several years that the Islamic god is not the God of the Bible, but you wouldn't believe how many evangelicals disagree with that.

Funny how we Americans get accused of mocking Islam yet it seems perfectly okay to ban Christianity in other societies.

Billwald, sure I want him to go to Jesus, but on God's time, not man's.

I agree with you 100% rockrambler.

Historically speaking, they do worship the same God as Abraham, or claim to be anyway. Spiritually speaking, they worship an entity they call Allah made up many centuries ago by a false prophet named Mohammed.

In the same token, Jews do not worship the True, Living God spiritually, although they also do worship Him in a purely historical sense.

Islam does trace back to Abraham, just as Christianity, and Judaism do. They all came out of the Jews' religion, though Islam has long since parted company with the truth.

The same can be said of the different Christian factions. Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, etc, all worship the same God historically, in that we all came about through the early Christian churches, but most of them, I'll let you figure out which, have long since abandoned the truth of the scriptures, and with out the truth, we can not really worship God.
