Not trying to start a debate about war. But I found this interesting even though it was from 1988.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (ODNS) - Soviet soldiers sent to Afghanistan as a punishment for their Christian faith are evangelizing Afghans and leading Bible studies there. This surprising news was revealed by an anonymous Open Doors News Service (ODNS) source who once lived in Afghanistan and has just returned from a fact-finding trip to that country.

"A large number of Soviet soldiers who are believers are actively sharing their faith with Afghans," the source said in an exclusive interview. "They are giving out Christian literature, as well as holding Bible studies and prayer meetings in the country."

Let's add some sunflower seeds," Donna told three Afghan women as she taught them how to bake streamlined batter bread out of a Betty Crocker recipe book.

With firm hands yet a gentle grip, she demonstrated mixing the batter to Farhana, Nazifa, and Rozama. They have been perfecting some Western baking recipes for weeks at the Women's Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. Soon enough, they will also train other Afghan women how to make Western breads and cookies.

But beyond helping the three women become Western cooks—and thus making them more employable—Donna has something else in her heart that she wishes they could learn. "I wish they would know Jesus," she prayerfully murmurs as she thinks about the Muslim ladies.

Thanks for that post. It was a real blessing. There are a lot of christians in Afganistan, Iraq and palestine who are caught in the middle of all the hostilities there who really need our prayers and support.
