Do you think that our youth are feeling the effects of ageism from older individuals when it comes to the spiritual life?

I would say yes, and I am still feeling the ageism from those whom I've left at a certain church.

Since no one else is jumping forward, I guess I will. Ageism is a part of sociology, a recognized defined and generally accepted social problem, and deals with the discrimination of those who are young or old (extremes of the chronological age spectrum). Issues dealt within ageism is the explotation of youth, their abuse or sexual abuse, the abuse of elderly in financial areas and their neglect in areas such as nursing homes.

    Hope this helps explain some.

1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

Granted Aaron, but how about answering the question instead of using scripture that we know that the youth are to be submissive to their authority?

Yes, quite dramatically in the recent accounts of Catholic priests and Baptist ministers abusing many children over a period of years. They used their position to overwhelm young people that were taught to trust them. They would not have succeeded as much or as often with adults.

On a far lesser scale is what you alluded to.
We all "know" that a young kid like you leaving a church for another is only looking for better entertainment. ;)

Well assuming that Teresa wasn't exploited or sexually abused, I would say she felt discriminated against somehow, or that her youth itself was despised.

I wanted to say, "That's life. Get used to it," but this seemed like a relevant Scripture.

I think there is a certain mentality in some churches that keeps saying that youth are not ready for things yet. A lot of older christians think that because we are young, we are not strong christians.

Like my mom always says, don't assume. Why? Because you're wrong. But with that personal of an issue, I won't say anymore, but let her talk about it if she chooses to.

That's a little harsh. How about the scripture posted right above this forum? Should I, as a younger member of the body of Christ, be treated differently than you because of my age? No, simply becuase there are certain things that I am able to do that you are, or you are not.

Aaron, I was not abused in the church, but prepare to receive a deep PM from me. The reason that I left the church was because I was not allowed to minister through the gifts that God has given me. Why should I have stayed? Because that is where my mother went/goes? In the search for a church there are several aspects that I look at:
    1. Are they truly following God's will?
    2. How do they treat the youth?
    3. What is there that I can become involved with in ministry?
and 4. Is this where God can use me and minister to me the most?

Now, the previous church that I attended did not have these aspects, and I did not feel God wanting me to be there.

Aaron, discrimination is discrimination. It is bad enough that I have to deal with it outside the church simply becuase I am a young 20 woman, but would you not agree that I should not have to face this same discrimination because I am young as well...

Just because individuals are young does not mean that they cannot be used by God.

While I attended my previous church, I discovered that God has blessed me with the talent of music. Now, discovering this gift I sought ways to be able to minister to people through it. When I asked if I could provide special music, or if I could be involved in this or that, I found that, yes, I was allowed to, but once every year? Come on now, if that is not discrimination, what is? Discrimination is not jsut abuse or rape, it is the simple act of not allowing the same opportunities you would allow another person based on who they are, what they look like, or how old they are.

For the record, yes Aaron, I did suffer years of abuse, but thankfully God has brought me through those years.

So, to say that that is life. Deal with it, is not the correct approach to this problem, because it is indeed a problem. The correct way to deal with it is to recognize the problem, and then take steps to correct it.

Ageism...yes, it is occuring, and because it is occuring, we are not allowing our youth to do as God intended them to, as God has intended us all to do....Minister to one another and to help carry each other's loads.

    In Christ's gracious love,
    Teresa

    Aaron said:
First of all I agree with Aaron and am myself 56 years old and have been in my church 35 years. In times past the younger folks always listened to the elder ones. Those who are where they are heading. The church to me today has lost that practice and our young folks are growing to fast. I understand that you want to contribute and over time you will but don't mistake Gods will for your own. God children must be nurtured gentley along so they can grow in grace the proper way. I find this so true when young folk pray that they want an answer now. They are in such a hurry to serve God that they lose patience.

Baptistforever said she had a talent for singing but they only used her once a year. I see a lot on here that this is Gods will and I must do it. If it is Gods will what makes you think you won't be allowed to? There is your will and Gods will and Gods will wins every time. Be careful when you ask Gods will be done because his will may not be the same as yours. when I was a youngster I found this out the hard way and sometimes Gods will is not what you thought.

When you are young you make assumptions and now I at 56 wished I had listened more closely to those of the aged sages were trying to teach me. I was young and they didn't understand what Gods will had in store for me or I thought but they were also taught by the Mothers and Fathers of Jerusalem in the church. We must never lose sight of those gray headed saints they have much to teach us and we have much to learn. So I shall also join their number if I am not already there. There is no hurry to grow in grace and if you try to rush it... it doesn't work that way.

I gradually got to where I am and had to get here with much patience and all the other attributes that make up a disciple of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It didn't happen over night and is a continuing process thoughout the life of a follower of Jesus Christ. That is why the scriptures say Grow up in the nuture and admonishion of the Lord... but I would like to add take your time!... Brother Glen [IMG]

Don't get me wrong... I have the utmost respect for those older than me, but when the youth is limited to just about nothing, I must say that there is a problem there.

Often times I heard, when you get older, when you get older...Older never comes, and do we not want our youth to start serving God early in their life? If yes, wouldn't one way be to have them participate in ministering to those in the church?

The first time that I recieved any kind of true respect was when I came back from Basic Training, I was 20pounds lighter and more confident in myself. That happened because I was given the chance to minister to those that I was going through training with. I'm sorry, but I have seen too musch hyprocrisy in many churches, and that saddens me. "Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example..."

How are the young supposed to show an example if they are not given the opportunity?

    In Christ's gracious love,
    Teresa
