I’m not so sure that I’m going to age that gracefully. I’ve had to adopt reading glasses in the last couple years. Everyone said, wait until your 40, but I couldn’t see it happening, then at 44 I found myself moving paper near and far so that I could read it. One day while trying to read the small print on a street atlas, even in the sun light I could not, I had to face reality and humbly buy some reading glasses, I was late. My “friends” sure had fun teasing me about the new glasses.

I was a wrestler and even at 35 entered a tournament and wrestled against the college boys, I was the oldest one there. I paid afterward for that one. On and off I lift weights in my exercise room that has about everything. After a few months of laying off and then jumping into a routine I’ve had to learn the hard way, several times, that I can’t do the things the way I used to. The soreness, injuries, and recuperation times are ridicules along with the speed that I drop in conditioning after a lay off. Always frustrating and eye opening, every time!

Went to a family reunion back East recently, man did everyone look and act old, small town people I haven’t seen in 20 years, they all talked reeeaaal sloooow and although I enjoyed listening to the stories it was all I could do to stop from finishing their sentences and laugh at the subject matter. It was a heart warming experience but scary, and I really looked and felt out of place with them. EXCEPT my graying hair! Now, I did have one cousin that I was more in tune with and ended up spending a lot of time with, she was laughing at me in how patient I was in getting to know all my relatives and the attention I was getting; her sitting there knowing it had to be a culture shock for me as she read my thoughts. I was literally talking to 2 or 3 people at the same time in separate conversations, looking back and forth, and I really don’t think they noticed.

Anyway, my cousin looked really good and she is 8 years older than I. We talked about the genetics of the gray hair in which she told me her real hair color is pure white. I could not even imagine her with white hair and thought of what a drastic difference it made. Sooo, now I’m dyeing my hair, it really does make a difference in the appearance of my age.

It’s so apparent that I’m going to fight and not accept this aging process to the end. I’ve just committed to training some young men with weights, have set high goals for myself to reach in a couple years at 50. I’ve started taking Greek in part to help strengthen my memory. Diet and skin are also on the top of the list.

I just don’t feel ready to get old, but the reality is setting in and the battle has begun.

I had to chuckle at this. I turned 31 this year, and I told my husband the other day that I am getting old because once I turned 30 I started falling apart. Within one year I had high blood pressure, gallstones, and a lot of other medical issues that I have never had before. Some of my issues could be attributed to high stress levels in my life. My doctor said the same thing happened to his wife at 35. When you read the Bible and think about all the people who lived hundreds of years, it kind of makes you sad to know that at 30-40 you are already getting old.

Benjamin, I think that you're setting yourself up for trouble.

I'm much older now than I was many years ago, and I don't like it one bit. I suppose that none of us does. But trying to hold on to youth (as in dyeing your hair) is the pursuit of fantasy, and that can lead to greater and greater foolishness, some of which could ruin your life.

Embrace reality, whatever it is, and live it to the glory of God.

For the OP, I don't be afraid to condiser laser eye surgery if your vision is somewhat stable.

I'm going to turn 40 in January. I look closer to being in my early 30's, though. I can't really attribute it to anything. Never done drugs. Don't smoke, very rarely consume alcohol (the occcaisional chardonnay with dinner when dining out). I work out at a local gym 3 times a week, don't worship the son, and am a big fruit and veggie eater (but not at the cost of my peat and potatoes). I drink lots of water, and don't skimp on sleep.

But I think the primary reasons I look younger than I am is because I cast all my cares upon the Lord, and I watch a lot of Star Trek.

    Benjamin,
It doesn't sound like you're married, but if you are, you might want to ask your wife what she thinks. I know many women, myself included, who find men with graying hair and glasses that suit them to be very distinguished/attractive (my own husband in my case). I think it's better to just look like who you are naturally. Just my opinion. [IMG]

The reading glasses do kinda make me look smart. [IMG] But I’m to young for gray hair and my wife has stopped calling me "OLD man" because of it. I might have to go buy me some of those baggy pants now.

Getting old IS a perk, consider the alternative.

Getting old is part of life. I'm 42 and have a ton of gray hair (the horry head of wisdom) that I attribute to genetics. My Dad has been gray ever since I've known him. When I was on my last submarine, I was the fifth oldest guy on the boat and had been in the Navy the second longest.

I can still work circles around guys half my age.

I keep myself in shape and my wife says I look good. That's all that matters.

Alright - who started this topic two
    days before my birthday?

I know i'll only be ONE year older - but it
seems to all come in the same day.
I'll not be supprised if a limb or face
    doesn't fall off.

That was the good news. The bad news is
    on 25 Sept 2005 i'll hit the big SIX-DEUCE.

Have a nice day boys and girls ;)

Hmmph. You're all a bunch of young whippersnappers and just need to get some real maturity before you start worrying about things that really matter . . . like, why DID I walk into this room? [IMG]

    anyway, I was born 10/30/41

I am not favorably impressed with 21st century men. They are performing quite poorly, both within and without the "born again" circle.

He ran off with the Sunday school teacher and left his wife and 6 kids and the “good men” of the church promised to help support them. It consisted of one very small donation of a couple bucks and a couple meals. After that her mother ironed clothes for pennies to support them.

I think it's in the percentages. Men have always been immoral, but there seems to be an increasing percentage of those who think that it's permissable to be and act that way. Example: the divorce rate within evangelicalism.

    Things have changed.
