Mutiny as passengers refuse to fly until Asians are removed

Passengers refuse to allow holiday jet to take off until two Asian men are thrown off plane

By CHRISTOPHER LEAKE and ANDREW CHAPMAN 12:08pm 20th August 2006

British holidaymakers staged an unprecedented mutiny - refusing to allow their flight to take off until two men they feared were terrorists were forcibly removed.

The extraordinary scenes happened after some of the 150 passengers on a Malaga-Manchester flight overheard two men of Asian appearance apparently talking Arabic.

Wow, that's worse than Jim Crow.

The airlines should follow the Israelis' example and seat an air marshal on either side of a suspicious passenger.

Amazing. From the number of postings on this Board I was under the impression that only Americans -- perhaps only Republicans -- were fearful, profiling and convicting prior to a trial's end.

Now it appears some people value their lives sufficiently that they wish to protect them no matter who might be offended.

    Ooooo! Sarcastic hyperbole!

I admire people unafraid to give posting advice which they decline to follow themselves.

The scruffy looking men - who might have spoken Arabic! - had already been through security and were ultimately allowed to fly home. Did they pose any real threat?

The passengers who wouldn't board the flight should have been allowed to buy new tickets and take a later flight, imo.

Perhaps. But that's where economics takes over.

    15 Passengers or 2?

But the tickets had already been bought, so it's 15 more tickets, more $$, or providing hotel accommodations for 2, less $$.

Now that is radical profiling . . . profile them and put them under armed guard . . .

I guess that is what you meant by worse than Jim Crow laws?

I commend these victims of racism for being understanding of the irrational fears of others in this tense time in England.

Which is worse - having to miss your flight (possibly your gig, vacation, connecting flight or job), getting searched and researched or being escorted somewhat unobtrusively by a marshal? I would choose the marshal. The marshal would probably be better company than some yahoo scared of a man with a beard.

The al Qaida training manuals reportedly advised the potential hijackers to be clean-shaven and as Western-looking as possible to blend in.

So if your the wrong color, wrong race, have a beard, or just plain look funny today(what if your the type of person who sweats a lot with a little heat, like me) you may be asked to leave a plane after you've passed through security.
there is something wrong with this picture.
Did those two men turn out to be terrorists or hijackers? Were they dangerous to others on the plane?
No, then it's just plain wrong.

With that in mind, what should one (or a group) do if they are suspicious about someone on a plane?

If they are sufficiently concerned, perhaps they should inconvenience themselves and request a later flight? But, once they do so, what should the airline do to meet their obligations to all of the passengers?

Every middle eastern male between the ages of 15 and 50 that gets on a plane should be searched, his baggage examined, and a background check done before being allowed to board. No exceptions.

This I disagree with. Just because a person is of a certain ethnic heritage doesn't mean squat. That would be like Americans rounding up Japanese Americans during World War II, "just in case." Oh wait... that happened? Man... some things never change.

I hope no 30-year-old fat, bearded white male does anything bad... I may never be able to fly again! Oh wait... white guys commit crimes? Guess I won't be traveling soon.

I expect most people to disagree. Political correctness is in vogue and ,in this case, can get a lot of people killed.

Statistics will illustrate the fallacy of your statement that ethnic heritage doesn't matter. It matters a lot.

I agree with Joshua. Why is it that virtually anytime an idea of how people should be treated is contrary to your it is suddenly "political correctness?" Should we not, as Christians treat all people equally? You call it political correctness, I call it respect for other human beings.

Why did we not "profile" all young white men who had served in the military after the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal buliding? Was that not the profile Timothy McVeigh would have set out?

As to what we should do if we feel uncomfartable - It should be reported and that person should take another flight. There is too much room for abuse and personal prejudices.

I love the paranoia I find on this board! The true terrorists have won. We have all but shut down many aspects of our society and we are cowering behind the "Patriot Act" or more appropraitely the total dismantling of the fourth amendment. Also, on a Christian board, have we forgotten the peace of Christ.

I know I'll hear from this, please think about what I am saying. I consider much that is said on this board very unChristlike in attitude.

I pray that you may experience God's peace in your lives.

    Tim

It depends, what are you basing your suspicions on? Race?
If you don't want to fly on a certain plane get off and buy a new ticket.
I am assuming those men turned out to be nonthreatening?
My grandmothers family was from the middle east, and all of them were rcc for several generations back, so far back no one remembers the family not being rcc.
Why would they need to be searched?
