Tauranga party ends in vicious brawl
    Jan 8, 2006

A party in the Welcome Bay suburb of Tauranga turned into a vicious brawl on Saturday night leaving several officers injured, one critically, and party-goers angry at the way police managed the situation.

Police arrived just after midnight but had trouble gaining an upper hand.

"It was crazy it was absolutely crazy. You could see it was going to happen with the amount of alcohol," said brawl witness Steve Walters.

The party was described as out of control with over a 100 drunk people fighting and spilling out on to the road. Glasses, bottles and bits of steel were used as weapons for attacking police, weapons which left one female constable with a fractured skull, shoulder and nose. The officer is now in intensive care at Tauranga hospital.

Witnesses say she was repeatedly kicked while lying on the ground. One witness saw it all from his house across the road.

"It looked like she was dead or something she wasn't moving," said Liam Murray.

The party-goers are blaming the police for the riot.

"Everyone was leaving and the cops came batoning everyone, let the dogs out and everything, that's how it turned in to a riot," said party-goer Philipaa Wata.

According to Greg Turner of Tauranga police, the officers had no choice but to use batons and pepper spray.

"The police acted with minimum restraint to protect themselves and others and effect arrests," he said.

A 27 year old man has been charged for assaulting the female officer. He and six others will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Monday.

People do things they would not do until they are influenced by alcohol. Statistics prove it over and over.

What was it Shakespeare said? Something like, "Men put this in their mouths to steal their brains!"

"Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine" (Prov. 23:30-31).

At few years ago I commanded a temporary US base in the desert in the middle east (alcohol was much more difficult to come by than in the US). Of course there was a flourishing black market in alcohol - I was continually amazed at the innovative ways the Soldiers and Airmen had of obtaining alcohol - on flights in and out of the base, and from local Arabs who sold it to them, etc. From time to time the Provost Marshall would brief me on some serious incident that took place (fight, assault, or sexual abuse) and the Command Sergeant Major would look at me and say, "Sir, I will bet alcohol was involved", and it ALWAYS was - every single major incident that happened had alcohol as a contributing factor.

I am not in favor of legalizing marijuana, but would you not agree that ( I might point out that I wasted about 15 years of my life smoking pot) banning the sale of alcohol and legalizing marijuana would cut down on violence and automobile accidents? I know from experience that alcolhol brings out the worst in most people but when I smoked pot I was sedated to the point of sheer laziness and just wanted to sit and vegetate. I am saying that if you had to choose between the two which one would yoy rather see legalized?

I don't think there is much to be gained from further discussion on the abuse of alcohol. Drunkenness is a sin and, even if it weren't, from a practical standpoint it's just stupid.

See why it is wrong to consume alcohol? see what is associated with this junk? i am so sick and tired of people premoting this stuff. sick and tired of the beer and alcohol commercials that say "drink responsibly." all alcohol does is fry your brain, get you killed, ruin your Christian testimony, and makes you do things you wouldn't do if you were sober.i don't want to get into an argument here, just stating the truth. i really like your comment RayMarshall19... very very nice:thumbs:.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

I notice in that verse it does not say drink in moderation, No, it says Wine mocks and strong drink is raging... both are deceivers.

If one is tempted to pick up that drink, even in moderation, one has been decieved.

It has been posted in other threads, for one who has never drank before in their life, a glass of alcohol, and many times less is enough to get that one drunk. So, how can one say moderation?

I tasted wine in a Korean church once in communion. Just the normal size communion cup. I did not know it was real wine, no one told me it was. It made me lightheaded within a few minutes.

So, how can one say their one glass or two glasses is moderation?

That, sir, was a purely psychological reaction unless you drank the whole cup!

Psychological reaction? You did not even read my post. If you had read it correctly, you would see that I did not know it was real wine. How could it have been psychological?

And I did drink the whole cup. It was one of those little communion cups they have in Baptist and AoG churches.

Either you knew it was wine when you tasted it, or that was an awfully large cup.

Or you had an allergic reaction.

I Timothy 3:8: Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.

I notice that this verse DOES say drink in moderation, not as a command but as a limit.

I can't see the proverb you quote as anything but a warning about drunkenness. If it is a prohibition, then Jesus must have sinned when he violated it.

I said drunkenness is a sin and stupid, not drinking responsibly.

    Helen--
You are making an assumption about my husband. The cup was one of those tiny little communion cups--and he didn't know it was real "fermented" wine until he drank it. He did not know that this church was using "fermented" wine for communion.

He had no allergic reaction--he got light headed, like some people get when they have only a sip of alcohol. What if there had been a potential alcoholic in that church that day?

No, I did not know it was alcoholic wine. I had been taking communion in the church I attended ever since my release from prison.

It was not an awfully large cup, unless you consider the normal size one inch tall glass awfully large.

Allergic reaction? It was not an allergic reaction. It is the effect anyone who does not drink gets when drinking their first alcoholic drink. Drunkenness on very limited amount. Not sure how people can say they can drink in moderation.

The story in the OP shows why alcohol should be consumed in moderation.

Once you tasted the wine you defenantly knew it was alcoholic. Your mind then played on your predudece of what it thought would happen.

There is know way in this world a man weighing over, say, 50 pounds could get drunk on a small communion cup.

    Church youth group violence

Church Boxing Match Ends in Violence
    Jan 8, 2006, 02:29 PM MST

TOLEDO -- A melee outside a central city church sent two people to the hospital Saturday night. Police tell News 11 the Bethlehem Baptist Church held a youth boxing event at its activity center. After the event, a large fight broke out in the parking lot.

Police do not know what sparked the large scale violence. A man investigators say helped organize the boxing event ran over two people trying to escape the parking lot in his SUV. Witnesses and police say the fighting mob may have started attacking his vehicle and passengers using a baseball bat.

"He skirted backward, then he skirted forward and ran over my cousin and one of the girls. I started chasing him down the street," said witness Ovie Sarter

I just thought I should warn everybody how dangerous Baptist youth activities are. Next time you think about even attending even one of these you should consider what happened in Toledo.

This thread won't stop because for every Scripture that speaks against wine there is one which does not do so or even promotes it's use.

1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

At very least this passage teaches that wine is a medicine.
