Alito to be filibustered

Before I pulled this up and read our post Joseph, I was going to write. "Nuke the Democrats".

 

I heard it was because of his saying he disagreed with the "one man, one vote" ruling.

I disagree with that myself

 

To my own surprise a couple of Conservatives on this board are opposed to Alito as well. Something about him being part of the wrong church.

 

Bring it on. He's as good as we'll (right wing conservative Christians) get, and good as any to get the nuclear pop gun out of the closet.

 

I imagine that that is probably not what he actually disagrees with.

 

This is a battle that needs to be faught anyhow. I think a lot of conservatives are spoiling for this fight so that the democrat version of filibustering judicial nominees can be laid to rest once and for all.

My prediction is that democrats are deathly afraid of the outcome of this battle and will not filibuster.

 

I concur. but I bet they will fight it out and the Republicans will win just before the Dems are certain they will win the white house. The effect of course is so that Republicans would be unable to stop, through a filibuster, another Ginsberg.

What big political issue am I missing here that I don't understand this reference.

 

They're upset that he's a prolife conservative, some conservatives are upset that he's not conservative prolife enough. Go figure! This is why I hate politics (though I love civics).

He's demonstrated a constuctionist ability to interpret and apply the constitution on matters of ruling. That makes him perfectly suited for the bench, and I support him as a SCOTUS judge.

 

But only to liberals and democrats. By calling it the "nuclear option", they want to put the worst possible face on it.

Republicans prefer to call it the "Constitutional option" because requiring 60 votes is a Senate rule and has no basis in the Constitution, which calls for a simple majority to confirm judicial nominees.

You are correct.

But I believe in common use my assessment is still correct.

But it's still useful to know.

 

It may well have been Trent Lott, but originally the term was applied to the filibuster the democrats started for the first time against a nominee. The Dems turned the tables by insisting that if the Rep's were going to stop them, THAT was going to be considered the N. option.
