A record number of players were voted or added to the ASG roster because of injuries and no-shows. Most notably, Derek Jeter snubbed the ASG due to "fatigue" and it was reported he went to Miami for partying with his supermodel girlfriend.

    1. Did the no-shows sit well with you, or not so well?

    2. Would you punish no-shows, as has been floated? Some have said no-shows should be fined or must forfeit bonuses, etc.

    3. Should fans still vote for the ASG? A couple of ESPN types say that if the players do all the voting, the no-shows will be reduced.

    Here's my plan:

Take off a week at least for the ASG. Play the game on Wed or Thurs. That way, the Ps who play on Sun can play midweek. Start league play back on Mon of the following week. That gives teams a full week off. Maybe it extends the regular season a couple of days, but so what?

A couple of days? Baseball starts back up today. Under your plan, baseball wouldn't start back up for 4 more days. Game 5 of last year's World Series was played on November 1st. Under your plan, that game wouldn't have been played until November 5th. If it had gone to a 7th game, then we're looking at November 8th, at minimum for the World Series to mercifully end. Are you Ok with November baseball?

Jeter showed his true colors years ago when the City & state of NY had to take him to court for back taxes....his claim is that since he keeps a home in FLA he doesnt have to pay NY Taxes ( come on you play for the Yankees). Next he doesnt offer this kid some renumeration for the baseball? Total jerk!!!

So if you work in Philly and live in NJ, you ought to pay both? But that's another thread.

Lopez got lots for doing what he wanted to do. Jeter is a jerk because the guy does the right thing and gives him back the ball. btw, here's a follow up article about his tax problems and what is being done.

I am a fan of Jeter, so I'll defend him. You may be the only person of all the people who play with him and against him who think he's a "total jerk". But then you're much closer to him than any of them are.

No No....I would have payed the kid & been at the all star game....but perhaps because your a Florida boy & he was down in fla....maybe your closer to him. :p

Well I guess you dont have to work in NY then.....at least thats what NY does to Jersey & Connecticut people who work in the City. Pay or dont play. I guess he can go play for one of the Florida teams (they do seem to hire the elderly) LOL

Once players got paid big bucks for their season, the all star game became less important. It used to be a source of income for players. They played 2 games for many years. I think you'll have no shows no matter who does the voting.

But at least it's not like the pro bowl or the NBA all star game where defense is a dirty word.

I like the idea of putting the game to Wednesday and then starting back up on Friday or Saturday.

Play the all star game at the end of the season....after the series. Extend it to Thanksgiving or better yet Christmas  That way nobody will watch it:laugh:

My friend, you have hit the nail on the head. It isn't as big an income to players making millions a year or even hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. When players needed to work in the off season, it was much different.

No, did not sit well with me.

No-shows should not get their AS Game bonuses unless they attend the game.

Yes, fans should still be allowed to vote for the AS players. If players do all the voting I foresee collusion, either to get certain players into the game or else to ensure that guys don't make it.

Can't take a full week off as MLB wouldn't want to miss playing the weekend games after the AS game. However, I agree with having the game played on Wednesday with games resuming on Friday.

    A couple of other things.

    1. Drop the rule that if an AS player pitches on Sunday they can't pitch on Tuesday. A pitcher's bullpen session is usually the 2nd day after their previous start, so if a pitcher throws on Sunday afternoon, I think they could pitch one inning on Tuesday night (as if it were a bullpen session.) Justin Verlander missed out on pitching in this year's AS game because of this rule.

    2. Compress the Home Run Derby into 2 hours instead of 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It simply takes too long and doesn't hold people's interest. Get rid of Chris Berman (back, back, back, back....) as the announcer.

    3. Have a pitching contest. Have pitchers compete to see how many pitches they can consecutively throw into a target area set up at home plate. (Advertising opportunity!) The target could be reduced in size for each subsequent round.

Yes. Why not? We had it in 2001 and the Earth still rotated quite well :) If it means getting quality, I'm all for it. Besides, the March floor has been cracked. So they'll just start earlier to avoid November baseball.
I don't know that I buy this much. It was a source of income for the rich players in the 70s and 80s, and people cared about the game then. I think the mindshift started when, as only baseball can do, it started fouling up that which is special about itself.
I disagree to an extent. I've read a dozen articles or so. The players voted in by the players pointed out (all, to a man) that they were more honored by the players' selection than fans' selection. Fans' vote is now a dog and pony show. No way Derek Jeter is still the best SS in the game. No way Chipper Jones is best 3B in the NL. But I am okay with fans' voting to an extent.
isn't it usually 3rd day? And by the way, players, MLBPA, and the owners love this rule. They don't want their multi-million dollar investment going out there and getting hurt.
They've tried a "skills" competition before, ala the NHL and NBA. No one wants to watch Matt Wieters hit a doughnut on 2nd base from his knees. That's not ESPN. It's all about the long ball.

Someone mentioned having the game on Wednesday and restart the season on Friday. Won't work. the P used on Wed is likely toast in the weekend series, at least at the start. Plus, that's tantamount to what we have now. Doesn't help much. As for why baseball is in love with that weekend back, why? the NBA and NHL take extended times off. Their fans don't seem to mind. Frankly, as a Reds fan, I could use a few more days off :) But I'd be willing to try this first before we went to my plan. Just don't think it would work for a lot of reasons.

That's the problem though. November baseball is usually marked by bad weather, which isn't usually conducive to quality baseball.

You usually see far worse weather in mid to late March in some of the more northern climates than you do in Early Nov. Goodness, even here in TN you get freezes and snowfall in March but rarely in early Nov. We should pray for global warming to increase :tongue3:
We'd have to start in Mid March, if not sooner. Does anyone want snow-outs early in the season? :tongue3:

I don't think anyone wants snow outs. But for years we had them. If we are going to have snow outs, I would rather see them at the start of the season than see the WS is Nov.

What is the big difference between playing the WS in early Nov than playing it just before Halloween? It doesn't make that much difference in temps. No chance of snow really. I just don't get it.

Now, I know baseball doesn't like trying to compete with CFB or NFL, but that can be easily avoided. Besides, build a product worth competing and you solve that problem.
