My family and I have been attending an IFBC for some time now and I feel the church is doctrinal sound. Although every church can and will have certain quirks one can overlook and the same holds true with this church my family and I have been attending. One is the dress issue for women to participate in any church function. My wife will wear pants (not blue jeans) regardless, if the weather calls for pants. The KJV issue, I don’t have a problem with this issue as I prefer the KJV, but have taken a liking to the NKJV as of lately.

My wife and I were attending the Sunday night service when a new pastor’s assistant took the pulpit to talk about soul winning. First, our church is big on soul winning and a number of people show-up every Saturday morning. He started out with the statement that “since this service began, some 1,000 people have died in the US.” His presentation lasted some 10 minutes. He encouraged everyone to grab a handful of tracts and make an attempt to hand them out during the week. He went into detail how he planned on covering our entire county through our church’s soul winning program, by door knocking to ensure that our county’s residence have a gospel track in their hands. He stated that he personally did not want to stand before God without attempting this, because Jesus commanded this. He then went on to say, “I don’t want to put anyone on the spot, but I’d like to know how many will be present for soul-winning Saturday morning, by a show of hands.”

To be honest I was outraged that he first used an appeal to emotion by first stating how many people have died since the service began and second that he did not want to stand before God without doing all he could do to participate in door to door soul-winning. Then ask how many people were going to show up on Saturday morning.

First I am not against soul winning. I have been once and it was not my cup of tea. I have witnessed to co-workers, lost realities and have handed out tracts to waitresses and busboys at restaurants. I have shared my testimony with strangers on airplanes and airports. So I feel that I am doing my part in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ without going door to door. If door to door is your burden then I say, do it! I will support you by prayer. But I did not appreciate an appeal to emotion to try and convict my heart to go door to door.

Am I blowing this out of proportion? My wife says I am, but we both have been discussing finding another Church for over a year now and this attempt at an appeal to emotion may be what pushes me.

    I appreciate any opinions! Thanks…

You aren't going to always agree with everything but if you find yourself disagreeing with more than you agree with, then it may be time for you all to move on to a better fit.

No, I don't think you are blowing it out of proportion. One of my previous churches had a youth pastor that would basically indicate you're gonna burn in hell if you don't go soul-winning at the designated time each week. Me and my husband went several times only to find that he was cramming the Gospel down people's throats. He would lead them in a prayer and so Ok you're going to Heaven. He would not explain that the next step was Believer's Baptism or finding a good church. NOTHING!!! We finally decided we wanted nothing to do with their program and instead did personal soul-winning. They started spreading rumors about us shortly after and it just went downhill from there.

If you are being pressured into doing something you are not comfortable with it would be wise to talk to the pastor. You may not be the first person that has had a problem with this assistant. Otherwise, I would make it a matter of prayer whether the Lord wants you at that particular church anymore.

I will be praying for your situation.

I'm not sure, but I think maybe so.

Personally I have been involved in the past in door-to-door at previous churches and am presently involved in the door-to-door ministry in our local church here in WA. Those who participate practice individual and group prayer, fasting Scripture study and then hitting the streets.

The participation is "free-will" motivated on occasion with a scriptural admonition from our pastor. For instance pastor preached from Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem this last Sunday.

All the elect will be saved with or without our help, so why not participate and receive His blessing?

Since you did ask here is my advice: Do what you can, perhaps let the pastor know that the actual door-to-door is not your cup of tea. Offer to do the other necessary things. Pray, Perhaps fast, supply funds for tracts and/or scripture portions.
Prepare the literature, prepare the breakfast on the morning of the effort, clean up afterwards, etc.

Our pastor has made these options open to us.

Personally, I'm doing it all and going door-to-door, Lord willing (I'm not young anymore and we are scheduled to go to 3000 homes in February).

Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

I believe door to door witnessing is a calling and not something everyone is meant to do. I enjoy it very much and if I can't get to Tuesday Visitation in time to go out witnessing, I'd just as soon sit home and make calls or write post cards.

I don't think you are over reacting. I do think the man may have done this for the right reason tho.

FBCPW...would that youth pastor be a man with the initials DW? Just wondering, because this person was that way when trying to get us into that particular church.

Diane, you are so correct on this. Not everyone can go door to door. I personally used to when I was younger. I now witness via the internet, hand out tracts to cashiers, waitpersons, etc., and witness to whomever the Lord gives me an opportunity to witness. But for a man to stand in the pulpit and try to make the setting such as was mentioned above is a terrible thing. That is one reason we left the IFB movement. Many of the pastors/associates, etc., are just unbearably ignorant of the proper way to handle their offices and people in general. Sorry...that's my rant for today!

No, DW was already gone from that church when I started going. This person's initials are JM and he is still there. This is the same person who is also a child molester. He has tried stuff with 3 of the children that I still know from that church. He is using the ministry as a cover for his sins.

I get a lot of door to door and once I found out the HOW to's of door to door..I applied them at home.
    EXAMPLE:

    DTD: Knock ,knock..
    Me: Yes?
DTD: We'd love to share with you a few words from the bible if we could..it'll only take a moment of your time, but it can chage your life forever.
Me:I'm an opposer.A born again child of God.
    DTD:Thank you..bye.

some shaking of the shoes goes on before they get out of the yard and they make a quick retreat.

I've NEVER seen anyone born again, from a Baptist church in my area go door to door...
    WHY is that I wonder?

ONLY those from the JW's and the LDS chruches

FBCPastorsWife, I know whom you're speaking of now. I've heard this of him from others, also. I'll just let it stand at that.

No, I don't think you're blowing this out of proportion. Door knocking and tract distributing are not soul winning. It's door knowcking and tract distributing. The idea that "all you have to do to spread the Gospel is pass out tracts" is ridiculous. I never, never, discuss matters of faith with people who come to the door. Even if I tell them I'm a Christian, that's not enough for them, and then them start prodding to find out if I'm "the right kind of" Christian. The only time I accept anything is if it's a flyeer to visit a local church. That's an invitation, and I dont' mind those.

Anyhoo, getting to the point, there are numerous other methods of spreading the Gospel besides doorknocking and tract distributing. If it's not for you, then I hope the Lord helps you find the manner in which he will use you to touch others.

Feeling unconfortable on door-to-door preaching is not a valid reason to not doing it.

If you are doing it and all your brothers/sisters from your church are doing it, why you don't do it?

What do you think God's will is?

If a church/pastor uses guilt and intimidation and peer pressure and other psychological measures, I could not stay there.

If he is preaching the Word of God (instead of hobby-horse like KJVonly, pants on women, others you mentioned) he will NOT have to resort to the previous psychology. He will depend on the Spirit, not the "program" to do the work!

Your call evaluating what your church is doing.

Doors aren't saved; people are. Person-to-person was the method Christ followed! We find people whereever they are - sometimes at home, today more often in other places. Re-study John's gospel and follow the methods revealed there.

And if your youth pastor really is a molester, you have a much bigger issue than his insistence on door-to-door work before you. If a church is aware of this and willing to accept it, keeping such a person in leadership, it is time for all true believers to shake off THAT dust! (But be certain before you make such an accusation; receive not an accusation afgainst an elder without sufficient evidence.)

HankD...He "is"!!! There is another ongoing investigation right now. They lacked enough evidence a few months ago, but more stuff has surfaced. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon and he will be removed from his position in the church.

This is a real dilemma if there is not enough evidence. In the case of child abuse there MUST be some precautions taken no matter what the expense especially for someone working with children.

If it means suspending him with pay until this is resolved, so be it.

    My opinion of course.

FBCPW, I'll be praying that he is removed if all of this is true. It's a blot on the name of Christ for him to be serving.

Is door-to-door still around? In the past 11 years here, not one door knock. Did have a church come and tie a loaf of homemade bread on my door. No invite, just compliments of the church. JW comes 3-4 times a year.

I agree with you totally HankD. Unfortunately, the pastor is really old and he is totally blinded by the youth pastor. The good news is that this certain person lost their side job of driving the county school bus because they were alerted of the allegations. This however caused another problem. Since he lost that job, the lady that keeps records of all the financial statements has noticed large sums of money being payed to a radio station where they broadcast. The normal payment is $300. On more than one occasion the financial statement reported that the church payed $600 and when she asked the pastor, he said they had payed for the next month. Well, sure enough, the next month's financial report listed they had paid the $300 as usual. I have a feeling they are giving him more money than what the church is supposed to.

What's worse is that he has one of the church's charge cards from a local Supercenter (hint-hint). He has run up thousands of dollars of groceries, clothing, baby supplies on this card and the church pays for it. Even worse, he uses the tax exempt card!! If the store or the IRS ever found out, the church would lose their tax exemption.

He is an absolute disgrace to the church and to Christ's Holy name. Thank you AVL for your prayers. They are needed now more than ever!!
