Often I when I see a minster preach on TV he has no notes or Bible in hand. He may give out a few verses now and then.

Personally, I like to see a preacher with his Bible open - and giving the congeration time to turn to the passage.

Thoughts?

The Bible scares people and if they flaunt it around too much people might not tune in :).

I'm with you...a sermon without the Bible is not a sermon IMO. If the preacher has every verse memorized, that's great! But they need to give citation and time for those of us that don't have every verse memorized to get there.

In preaching, my Bible mostly remains on the lecturn and I look at the people in the congregation. I generally quote verses in street language, if you can imagine an Englishman using street language. I never saw the need to wave the Bible in the air, but people could follow me in their Bibles,,,and I encouraged that. I didn't wander away from the pulpit either. You might say I was prim and proper. Sorry that is me and I can't change that.

Cheers,

Jim

My pastor uses it well. :) Since we're going through Romans, we don't need to go flying around the Bible a ton but we'll usually go to atleast 2 or 3 other passages to go with what we're studying. I love it. :)

A lot of times at 11AM service I don't use a Bible at all. I generally preach the Sunday School lesson which is also the responsive reading which is in the bulletin. I usually read my text from the bulletin unless I want to pick up more verses than they included.

It is not the Word as in Bible I cling to in times of storm, it is the Word he has placed in my heart...

Ps 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Prooftexters like to take people on a wild goose chase to prove their point with the right wording. They could use the Sears catalog instead to do that.

Usually I have the text and other scripture references on the monitors. I turn to the text in my Bible and invite others to do so, too. During my preaching I don't usually turn to the references but simply quote them or read them off the monitor. I move around while I preach. That is what is comfortable to me.

We are going through Romans in our chapel this year at day school. It's only 30 minutes. We just hit chapter 6. Can't move too fast. I have the great pleasure of walking 3 classes through chapel notes again. What a pleasure! I can only second: I love it!

I can beat that, I think. We're on year 3 and we just finished chapter 10. :) Pastor took 4 years to go through Genesis, 3.5 for Revelation. Now it's Romans. LOVE book studies.

Of course he does go off on tangents like tomorrow when it's his 41st anniversary being at our church and he's having HIS pastor give the message. :)

I don't think we'll do that (take more than a year) - our audience is a little different - teens. They are learning tons though ;)

Edited to add - I could be wrong about that year thing. We have a new Headmaster who is absolutely wonderful and more concerned with the kids learning than anything else, so who knows . . .

I always use my Bible and sometimes I do use notes. Sometimes it is on the pulpit sometimes in my hands. I could never preach without it. :love2:

The ones you see on the telly are using full notes. They are viewed on a screen in front of them. Just watch their eyes roam back and forth as they preach.

Jim

Sorry for the self quote but I have to add this thought; I personally feel that it is awfully disrespectfully to my congregation to not have proper scripture for the message that God has given us. Yes I said us. Because that message is just as much for me as it is for them.

I do notice TV Pastors like Charles Stanley, Ed Young Sr. never let their Bible out of their hands. James Merritt uses his Bible too. Being originally from Jacksonville, Florida I love to watch Mac Brunson from FBC Jacksonville. He sure uses his Bible in combination with notes. My Pastor uses his Bible. It would be like going to a motorcycle repair class and the instructor doesn't have a bike in front of him :):jesus:

Don't they usually start with theory of combustion engines? Don't need a bike in front of you for that...

One of the best sermons I've ever heard was from an old man reading the Bible behind the pulpit, and lifting eyes every now and then to make a comment.

His sermon was 75% reading and 25% comment.
