Amazing grace

I'm watching the service for John Lewis (the TV's on for noise as I work). Dr. Wintley Phipps just sang Amazing Grace. My first thought was that he did a wonderful job on the song. He has a very soulful, deep voice.

My second thought was that Amazing Grace is a product of John Newton's experience when he was involved in the Atlantic slave trade. Newton, a white man, converted to Christianity in 1748. He continued slave trading until 1755.

"Amazing Grace" draws upon Newton's personal experience with sin in his life.

I wonder if this disqualifies "Amazing Grace" as if it were not for Newton's experience the song would not exist.

Therefore, according to America's black racist groups, he can never be forgiven. No matter what he did to make up for it. And the song, when they get around to it, will be attacked by the racist cancel culture.

He's white, you see.

One of the movies I liked was Amazing Grace, a sort of biographical story of ending the slave trade in Britain.
