“...it is the duty, as well as privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” -John Jay.

Duty, privilege, and interest, not a right. I think that you have misread the quote.

Apparently someone doesn't understand the mechanics of how our republican form of government was designed to work. It wasn't designed to give us a choice between rulers to rule over us it was designed in such a fashion that we could choose servants (hence the term public servant) from among us that would represent us and protect our liberties and interests in government from government.

Unfortunately today in the national elections we are only given a choice between two candidates that will serve or represent and protect the interests of the elite class who own and control most of the wealth, means of production and information that makes it to our tv screens, radio stations and newspapers by creating legislation and laws that increase their control over us.

Today we are ruled by a few un-elected elite through their chosen political operatives who prefer to be perceived as "government officials and authorities" rather than public servants.

The term for that type of government structure is oligarchy. We no longer have a functioning republican form of government and haven't had one for some time.
