Why Are Domestic Law Enforcement More Heavily Armed than Our Soldiers?

Rafael Rivera – who served in the U.S. Army for seven years – writes:

The police in Ferguson have better armor and weaponry than my men and I did in the middle of a war. And Ferguson isn’t alone — police departments across the US are armed for war.

The Hill notes:

[Senator] McCaskill pointed out that in some places local police departments are more heavily armed than the National Guard.

Business Insider points out:

I think Hattiesburg is one more example of why we need to heavily arm our cops! Thanks for posting this link. :applause:

I feel bad for the soldiers going into battle less protected than our police.

I'm sure Obama would agree with you, he seems to think the "King George" approach to treating citizens is best to and if it violates the constitution . . . well you know, it's better to feel safe than have a legitimate republican form of government. Right?

Congress Members Who Approve Militarization of U.S. Police Receive 73% More Money from Defense Industry

Americans of all stripes oppose the militarization of U.S. police forces.

For example:

A December 2013 Reason-Rupe poll found that 58% of Americans thought that police militarization has gone too far

A new Pew research poll shows that a plurality of people think that the police have gone too far in Ferguson, Missouri

So why does Congress continue to approve militarization? For the same reason that Congress members vote for NSA spying on Americans and go easy on Wall Street criminals: money.

Maplight reports that congress critters opposing Congressman Grayson’s bill to demilitarize police receive 73% more money than those voting for it:

Things will be better when Obama is gone. I don't think the police around here are better armed than the military although the police around here are very formidable.
