I met a fellow today that I will call Abraham. He's a black South African and teaches at a Middle School in the area.

We had lunch together on this May Day. He's professing believer. He says he's been saved for three years. He attends a Word of Faith gathering in an English speaking church. He says he believes in Liberation Theology not the "white Gospel."

For three years in the 80's he had guerrilla warfare training in Cuba. Abraham wanted to undermine the apartheid regime in his home country. Fidel gave Abe's group warm speeches of encouragement periodically. Abe regards Castro very highly. He thinks of him as a hero.

Abe is finishing his fifth book on Nelson Mandella. That's his number one hero. Casto is #2 and Hugo Chavez in number 3. He recommended that I read the book Chavez gave to Obama. ( Gave to Obama, or recommended?)

Abe thinks it is shocking that South Koreans brush their teeth after meals. It is strictly taboo for black Africans to brush their teeth at work according to him. That practice should only be done in the privacy of one's home.

Abe is KJVO. He will absolutely not read any other English translation -- out of the question.

Remember that I am in South Korea. However, I consider them "our children."

Believe me, in a friendly but stern way I put it to him on a number of the matters where he expressed his radical views ( even his more benign dental hygiene beliefs.)

The number 1 thing which I am concerned about is his salvation status. He has a very confused understanding of what the Gospel entails.

I had also asked him if he killed anyone. He replied :"That is confidential information that I only share with my wife."

It is scary to think there are probably a lot more like him.

I understand that the Word Faith doctrine is spreading like wildfire in Africa.

I know a man who is a Vietnam Vet, was akin to the green beret. Has ways and has killed many a person, I am sure.

He is a professed christian, and I beleive God has changed him, but sometimes I wonder where he is coming from. PTSD delux.

I know of several other black South African teachers here. But I haven't probed them as much about these issues as I did with my one-on-one. I would hope that their ideas are more level-headed.

Yes, it is very dangerous. But Abe's other ideologies are very worrisome. Those particular beliefs go way beyond what a typical word-of-faith adherent holds to.

It is hard to equate what we do in war with how we live in society. Obviously most who serve either kill other humans, and maybe some of them are also Christian, but abhor guns and killing after the fact.

As a chaplain, I was faced with this question every day I was in Korea, and frankly, I don't have an answer. I was issued a gun and yet kneeled beside a dying soldier and prayed over him, my gun in the holster as I did it. It is not easy, but we had to think of the better good at the time, the goal we had in mind.

Today, I wouldn't fire a gun to save my own life. Back then I did and lived with the guilt.

    Cheers,

    Jim

In my part of the world, there are many, many people who would believe that Castro, Chavez and Mandella are some of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.
Che Guevarra was argentine. He is some what of a folk hero despite being a marxist.

Personally I have seen how liberation theology ties in with the prosperity gospel. Together they can make a very dangerous ideology that spreads faster than a forrest fire amongst the poor of Latin America.

Unfortunately, Che Guevarra is popular here as well, especially among younger people who were not alive when he was doing his thing. Two movies have come out about him, and they more or less make him into a hero.

I agree with you on liberation theology tying in with the properity gospel. This is a very destructive combination to the real gospel. I think we are seeing a rebirth of liberation theology in the U.S. among the more radical elements of the emerging church.
