"Analogy of Faith"

Could someone explain this term for me, and the contorversy surrounding it? It was used several times in the "Covenant/Dispensational" thread, but without definition.

I googled it, but only found a definition that says "let scripture interpret scripture." Wouldn't both sides agree with that? Also, what does that definition have to do with the actual words: "analogy of faith"?

basically, would be contrasting interpreting the prophetic word of God through lense of a literal understanding, or else via the lense of spiritualising the text....
