I would like to meet anyone who knows about the ancient history of China. Is it possible that the earliest migration to China could have been the family of Joktan, the brother of Peleg?

    See my web page:

    I've held that position, Mike.

Parallel to some of the gods of Egypt ('Sin' being chief god - Sinai, Wilderness of Sin then also used in China, like the Sino-Soviet war . . . )

Have to remember the earth's continents did NOT look then like they do today. In the days of Peleg the great land mass was divided.

    Bob,

Is there any actual evidence that the earth was physically divided sometime after the Flood?

Jacob Bryant, in his "New System or an Analysis of Ancient Mythology", says the division was between the righteous and the unrighteous. The sons of Joktan were all named, but not the sons of Peleg because he joined the pagans who went to Babylon. Then we have the lineage from Peleg to Abraham, who is found in Chaldea, but God called him out.

I have the Table of Contents for Bryant's mythology on the following page:

Peleg is a "linguistic fossil" found in almost every major language group. It's Hebrew meaning "divided". Often God had babies named for special reasons/revelation.

Fun study of "peleg" in languages
~Pelican (bird dividing water with beak)
    ~Archipeligo (islands divided by water)

    Bob,

It's also possible that the same "linguistic fossil" applies to the Pelasgi, the first inhabitants of Italy. It's unlikely that they were directly related to Peleg, but they travelled long distances by sea and their name could mean that they were divided from other peoples.

I would like to hear something about the alternative view, that the earth became physically divided. We know that the continents are shifting, and they might have shifted quicker in the past, but where exactly was the earth supposed to have split? Was it split between the Americas and Europe/Africa, and were there any people, in the days of Peleg, who saw the Americas moving away? Could the sinking of Atlantis be the Americas, disappearing over the horizon?

hello! THis caught my eye for no other reason than the fact that i am chinese. ;)

And i have "the discovery of genesis" in my library. It is a great evangelism tool for to reach chinese folks.

Sorry, for i won;t be much help here but I have watched a six part documentary called "Shen Zhou" (God's Land) done by folks in Taiwan, which recounts the one-God religion that the ancient Chinese held to until Shi Huang Di rose to power and imposed himself as god.
it documents ancient writings, (ones that i suppose survived the cultural revolution), even ones written by Confucious that talk about the one God. and writings of flood accounts. and the tower of babel.
    It's banned in china.

    Su Wei,

Sounds like you would probably enjoy _Eternity in their Hearts_ by Don Richardson. It has much the same theme using several cultural examples from around the world.

    Su Wei,

Do you have any references to these ancient writings, and do you know where they can be obtained?

Also, can you tell us anything about the Maio tribe from southwest China? They apparently have an oral history that tells the story of the Flood, and it identifies Noah's wife as "Gaw Boluen". It's in Ruth Beechick's book "Genesis: Finding Our Roots". Does Confucius, or any of the other ancient writings, say anything about this?

    Atlantis as continental separation? Absolutely.

Evolution speaks of continental "drift" - imperceptably slow.

In the days of Peleg the continents were divided. No implication of slow drift, but rapid and radical - in one generation!

    Bob,

In that case, what do you make of Bryant's suggestion that the division was between Peleg and his brother Joktan? The Bible only gives us a single phrase "in his days was the earth divided" (Gen. 10:25) without any explanation of what it means. Can we be certain about any of the popular interpretations of this?

I agree with Dr Bob here, not dogmatically, but I do agree.
