Any bird watchers

Right now, I only watch my cockatiel. She's got a clutch of 4 eggs, and I think another one's on its way. Alas, no daddy bird, so hence there will be no hatchlings.

 

HI Betty, it sounds like your rosey bird was a House Finch. A nice shade of tobacco brown with a rose colored chest and neck area???

I LOVE birds and have numerous feeders and bird houses. I also have 9 squirrels and two chipmunks. A friend found a baby squirrel and is hand raising it. We'll release it in my 1 acre, fenced back yard later this year.

I love birds and keep my binoculars and birding book right by the back door!

I love watching the birds. Some of my favorites are: "The American Goldfinch", "Cardinals" (of course, it's our State bird), "Bluebirds", "Red-bellied Woodpeckers", and the monster of woodpeckers around here known as the "Pileated Woodpecker" and it measures at about 17 inches long. When you hear it in the woods it sounds like a jackhammer going. I have many more favorites, too many to mention.

I have a wrought iron shepards hook with two feeders on it in front of my window so that I can watch the birds while I'm on the computer. Had to get the shepards hook because the racoons were tearing down my feeder and ripping it apart. I have gone through at least 5 feeders in the last 5 months. Put the shepards hook up on Monday and nothing has or can get to the feeders now!

Can't wait till the end of next month so I can put my hummingbird feeders out. I really love watching them!

My favorites include Indigo Bunting (very tiny and blue colored like a peacock), Rosebreasted Grossbeak, Blue Grossbeak, Eastern Bluebird, Cardinals, etc.

Our Cardinals never left this year. Neither did the Blue Jays. We'll have quite a few Goldfinch come through pretty soon. I also always have dozens of Mourning Doves. The neighbors chase them off but I love their call. Oh, like I said earlier, I like the Brownheaded Cow Birds. Their 'call' is very strange. We have one woodpecker that stays most of the year.

You can buy a Field Guide off Amazon for your area. Also, if you go online, you can find a list of common birds for your state. I love to sit and watch, listen to the birds. Very relaxing!

My grandmother LOVES birds! We have feeders all over the yard! From wild Bird feeders, finch socks, to hummingbird feeders. We always have a yard full of feathered friends. The only thing is, they constantly fly into our door, and if it dosn't get up, I'll bring it in, and take care of it.{Only thing is, make sure the box is weighed down when they start improving, otherwise they mgiht fly out! and my cordination skills don't work that well when I'm way up in the air, trying to get it out of a light fixture!} Still got that bruse on my hip from the last time I fell...
Oh, I don't know if any of you have heard of Gueneas, but our neighbors have a whole flock. I think they're a cross b't a chicken and trukey, and the left overs of everything else! Dem's the ugliest things I've ever seen, and since we keep an adequite supply of birdseed out, they now reside at our house. Now I could stand right beside them, and they'd not even move! I could probably pick one up, there so used to me!

We hang our feeders from treelimbs and shepherd hooks. We feed the squirrels sunflower seeds in pans on the growund and a bird bath, We also have ears of corn on a spinnig wheel on one ree. Squirrels love it. It has been said that squirrels and trees can't co-exist but they do at our house also Blue Jays are said to run off other birds but not here. The birds all have their place and co-exist very well.

Woodpeckers attack the trees, the Blue Jays and squirrels take turns with the sunflowers, the Finches love the thsitle seed socks, and humming birds drain the nectar feeders.

Why would anyone want to live in town ar a city?

 

The only luck I've had keeping the squirrels away from my bird feeders is to constantly supply things the squirrels prefer in other locations.

I put out the ears of corn, but the squirrels prefer sunflower seeds. I also put out roasted peanuts and songbird feed. I've really just given up trying to keep the squirrels out of my feeders. They spill out so much seed but many birds are ground feeders so......

Two years ago we strung a cord from one tree to another and put a feeder right in the middle. A squirrel dove from one tree top trying to land on the cord and broke the cord! They do seem to dislike my heavy wooden feeder because it's not as easy to tip and dig out the special seeds.

Aren't they great tho!

We have a birdbook in which we write down the time and date of each bird we have seen. Love to birdwatch.

 

Diane, we also feed the squarels! Unfortunatly my little brother is a little to eager for moving targets when he shoots his BB gun! So in the summer, not only do we watch birds and suarels, we watch the neighborhood boys!

The Hummingbirds are here . At least the males are. Saw one feeding this morning while I've been on the computer. I just got my feeder out, and I was a little late this year. So who knows how long he's been around. I've always heard that the males arrive first and then the females. Is there any truth to this? He is out there buzzing around the regular birds. He already thinks he's King of the feeder and the surrounding area. I love watching these guys!
