Any Idea Where This Doctrine Originated?

A minister who preached at our church recently mentioned a strange doctrine and for the life of me I can not find any scripture to back it, nor have I heard it taught anywhere in my 15 years of ministry.

The Doctrine? That the Holy Spirit indwells the dead body (in the grave), until at what time the rapture occurs. At that time, the Spirit is like a steel object that is attracted to the magnetic sound of Christ's Voice, and raises the body.

He used Romans 8:11 as proof text. And he stressed more than one time in that service that it was not the soul, but the Holy Spirit that indwelt the body, even after the death of the believer.

Has anyone heard of this teaching? And if so, what faith teaches such?

I have know idea who teaches this, but this belief may be based on 2Kings 13:21. There a man was being buried when he touched the bones of Elisha and came back to life. Dispite that, I struggle with the notion that you can be dogmatic here and say thet the Holy Spirit is with every body (of dead believers). Saying that, it is also true that the Holy Spirit is God, and God can do as He wills.

I see no reason why the Holy Spirit would indwell a dead man's body.

Nothing is impossible with God; If He raises up a dead man when the rapture occurs, would that be too hard for Him?

Personally, I will never accept such a doctrine. When a person dies, we all know what happens to the body after several years; and how about those whose ash had been scattered off to the sea? I don't see any rationale why the Holy Spirit would retain His presence all over the area to cover the ash of those persons. He's Omnipresent in the first place. I don't know, I might be too imaginative here.

Besides, no single doctrine would stand alone for itself. Normally, each doctrine is supported by several verses from different books (in the Bible).

    My two cents.

But what if the believer chooses cremation as a means of disposal of his body ? And what if, the believer further instructs that his ashes be scattered over the ocean, or over the hills or mountains, or some stream he used to frequent, or, if feeling totally unworthy, he asks his ashes flushed down the sewers, so, the Holy Spirit is also flushed down the drains of filth along with his ashes ?

    Absurd doctrine.
    Dangerous Doctrine.
    Keep away from it.

The Bible says 'My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation'.

I wonder if the doctrine is a byproduct of those that hold to cremation being wrong. It would be a proof doctrine for them.

I guess to me the question would be why would a LIVE Holy Spirit inhabit a Dead body? What purpose would it serve?

That is a stupid and heretical doctrine. The Apostle Paul is writing to living believers not dead bodies.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

It is likely that Paul is delivering the same message in Romans 8:11 that he is in Ephesians 2:5, 6 though I have not given this idea a great deal of study.

I am puzzled as to where this doctrine actually originated. Hopefully some of the theologians will be able to tell us.

The question is, does it even matter?
While sound doctrine is important, and a good answer to this would be nice, too many christians get bogged down in stupid questions and bizarre speculation. See either of the Timothies, they speak rather disapprovingly of such pointless arguements.

Could that have come from someone who believed in soul sleep?

Agreeing with gb93433, sounds like a form of soul sleep a doctrine taught by the Seventh Day Adventists and the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Basically between your death and the Rapture you are fully unconscious.

I wonder what he says about the early Roman Christians whose bodies were burned or eaten by lions or all those who were quartered and disemboweled or went to the pyre of the "Holy" Crusades or Inquisistion?

No theologian and I don't know where the doctrine originated. But I know who the father of it is. [IMG]

That's certainly a new one to me. The dead body is an empty shell that begins to return to dust of the earth upon death. For me, I plan on being cremated, so there will be no body at all, just a container of ashen material that doesn't remotely resemble my former body.

No, the human carcass is, literally, an empty shell to be cast aside when we die and go to be with the Lord.
Rather difficult. All bodies decay. Cremation simply accellerates and completes the process. Persons in caskets decay as well, it just takes longer.

    SFIC,

Are you the pastor of your Church? If so, please tell me you didn't allow this man to continue with this heresy once you recognized it from the pulpit of your Church.

There was a similar doctrine that is called "soul sleep." I'm not sure where it originated, but it was taught by Herbert W. Armstrong, a heretic who denied the trinity, denied salvation by grace, and declared that there were no Christians left on the earth in 1934, so he established the Worldwide Church of God which was the only true church. He also taught British-Israelism, that the good ol' white folks are the true Israel. The WWC has since abandoned Armstrongism, but there are a few still around.

Soul sleep teaches that at physical death, the soul does not go directly to heaven to be with God, but remains "asleep" until the bodily ressurection. It is not true.

But I've never heard the idea of the HS indwelling the body. Rom. 8:11 says something similar, but not that the HS is there in the grave. The HS is God, who is everywhere, yet non-spatial.

As an aside, scripture very clearly teaches that our present bodies will be ressurrected. This is what the church has taught for 1900 years, until our generation. We've somehow gotten away from this, and now most think that our present bodies are irrelevant. Scripture says they will be raised and glorified, as Christ's was.
