or other folks familiar with animal anatomy and physiology?

What is the appendage, caul, or lobe that is above, on, or around the liver in Leviticus 3:15 and related verses? Does it have another name in veterinary science?

KJV
And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away.
LEB
the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and he must remove the lobe on the liver in addition to the kidneys.
NRSV
the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins, and the appendage of the liver, which you shall remove with the kidneys.

Hebrew היתרת (yothe'reth) "something redundant" the membrane that covers the upper part of the liver.

Thanks. I was thinking more of what animal science might call it today. (Am too tired, lazy, and busy -- or one or none -- to research it at the moment.) Hoping someone might do my work for me! :D

As far as I know it is still called a "caul." There is even a superstition that a baby born with a caul on his head is going to be a special child.
