And I'm not talkin' Lucy & Desi! I'm talking the real McCoy here.

In order for future President of the United States John Adams to be allowed to enroll in Princeton University, the young man had to take the first 10 chapters of the Gospel of John and translate them from the GREEK into LATIN!

Where I teach we only require this in Senior Seminar. Not.

The sad fact is that Latin is not widely taught in our schools any longer. Instead of learning conjugations of Latin verbs, the few students motivated into taking a language course usually opt for "Conversational Spanish" or some other non-challenging course.

We KNOW Latin. The problem is we don't KNOW that we KNOW it! You are smarter than I look. By seeing a Latin word used in its English context, you already have an understanding of that language

Anybody else love language? English is so dependent on Latin, Greek, and German that to not understand language is to go through the Louvre with a blindfold.

    Thoughts?

I am quite fond of the Latin language as well. I had five years of it in high school (actually, one in middle, four in high). But alas, much of it has slipped from mind from not being used. I hope to try to refresh myself a bit over the summer, but we will see if that will happen! [IMG]

On a serious note - I do not know Latin. I took French in high school - I remember very little of it.

Perhaps if I had taken Latin - I would have done better with English!!!

I remember a comedy routine that a friend used to do at parties about a Catholic televangelist named Dominic Vobiscum whose phone number was 1-800 et cum spirit 2-2-0. [IMG]

    [IMG] Major B!

I took an etymology course in high school, and it was fabulous. Now, I can't directly translate Latin or Greek, but I can usually define and use a word with such roots, at the very least enough to let me understand a passage using the word.

We sang enough Latin in chorus, both in high school and college, that I can read it easily.

A friend of mine went to Harvard Div and had to take Latin and Greek, as well as another language of her choice. She chose Sanskrit. Ugh. [IMG]

We home schooled all three kiddos, and did a semester of Greek, Hebrew, Latin and then allowed them a choice. But it was a PRACTICAL introduction for English speakers, rather than learn mindless cases, genders, and public conjugations.

BTW, my boys both chose Japanese for the last semester (we got tape/video and text) so they could communicate with "Japanination" comics and cartoon development on computers (Robotech, etc)

My daughter chose heiroglyphics since she had been to Egypt with me and was interested in the language. Of course, I had to learn it with her!

Now she's deciphering color crayon writing on her living room wall from a 2 year old!

I love words in any language. [IMG]
I never got a chance to study them though. :(
One year of french and one in spanish in school was about it. Then I learned a bit of Cantonese and promptly forgot it after not using it. Someone taught me a bit of Thai or whatever it's called they speak and same as Chinese, I used it while I was there and then forgot everything except how to say no. LOL Learned the alphabet in hebrew off of Barney! Does that count? [IMG] Well, it's in the bible too so....
IF I ever get the chance to study it I will. I seem to have a knack for it and it seems so easy and fun to pick up something in another language and figure it out at least a little even if it's something you've never learned.
So Dr. Bob, if you want to start a little online course in Latin on the BB I won't protest a bit. ;)

Latin was a compulsary subject in the Grammar school that I attended, I love being able to `work out` what words mean using my -now- skeletal knowledge of that language.
We had to sing Gaudeamus igitur juvenes dum sumus...etc.at the beginning of Latin lessons and declining nouns and conjugating verbs were a daily excercise..... amo, amas ,amat, amamus , amatis, amant......... much of the vocabulary now evades me, but yes I love Latin.

Yeah, but he was not distracted by MTV,BET, and stylin' so that he can be down with love...

Teaching in an inner city high school has given me a unique perspective among my fellow 50+ old balding white dudes...

Heck, I even know who "fifty cent" is.

I love language study, too! I was always interested in language arts in school, especially grammar. Both hubby and I got a bachelors in Spanish, and my best friend was Brazilian, so I immersed myself in Portuguese as well. (Or pork-n-cheese as we call it) Took a year of German in college, but all I remember is "Wann haben sie geburtstag? Ich habe mein geburtstag im mai." (When is your birthday? Mine is in May.)
We are teaching the kiddos Spanish a little Portuguese as well. Folks here in the country make fun of us for it when they find out, but we dont tell many people.
Hubby has had several years of Latin and German in addition to Hebrew and Greek and he loves it! SOmetimes he reads the Greek New Testament to the girls just so they hear the sounds. THAT, I wish I could understand! He will be teaching a masters level Greek class in the fall at the seminary.
