Anyone into Southern Gospel?

Hmm ... I haven't yet had that privilege. But I'm sure he's a great addition to the group.

We went to a LordSong concert last weekend. Mike and Kim Lord were joined by Kim's sisters, Heather and Valerie, who generally sing with their mom as The Ruppe's. Wow, they were well prepared and the concert was fab! No one can sing "Such A Time As This" like LordSong. :wavey:

 

I love Southern Gospel as long as I can just listen and not look-usually all I see is the teased hair:smilewinkgrin:

Speaking of great southern gospel, we saw the
Kingdom Heirs at Dollywood earlier this week. Wow, they're fab! I enjoy their selections every time I see them in concert.

Hi, I'm new here and just ran across this thread. Actually, the group is Tribute Quartet and yes, Jacob Kitson is doing a great job. He seems to be a fine young man. The group has become good friends of ours and we try to get out and support them any time we can. All the guys, Gary Casto, Josh Singletary, Dennis Dugger and Jacob are very talented and genuinely nice guys. Check out their website, www.tributequartet.com. :thumbs:

 

What is now being called Southern Gospel we used to just call Gospel music. A Gospel Quartet (Florida Boys, Cathedral Quartet, etc.) or a Gospel group (The Happy Goodmans) would sing Gospel music. On Sunday mornings while we were getting ready for church we would watch "The Gospel Singing Jubillee" (at least that's what I think it was called) on T.V.
As for the group you mentioned, I have never heard of them either. There is no radio station in this area that plays Gospel Music. :tear: I find this strange here in the Country Music Center of the Universe. {Where would Nashville be without Reba, Garth, Toby, Carrie, Kix Brooks, Vince, etc., all Okies. 6 out of the top 12 awards recently had an Oklahoma Connection.}

I sometimes listen to Southern Gospel. I listen to a variety of artists: The Statler Brothers, and gosepl songs by Charlie Daniels, Paul Overstreet, Emmylou Harris, and others.

 

Sorry, I'm hooked on the Rochester Family and their blue grass gospel. They were at our church last month and their "Highway to Heaven" turned into my favorite. Oh, then there's "Following the Leader", or maybe....

I agree with that. The most hideous song I have ever heard is "Turn your radio on, listen to the Master's radio." When I hear that, I turn the radio off, off, off. The hymn book is just fine with me.

Or, songs like "drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life" need to be banned.

 

The Rochesters are great! I have been wanting to hear their new album. I also like McKameys & Inspirations. Do you like them?

To those who do not like Southern Gospel: I agree somewhat with what you say, in reference to elements of southern gospel, but not necessarily southern gospel as a whole. I think there are some groups that are more conservative than others. I do think some of them can get out of hand though. I especially like the groups I mentioned above and wonder if you would feel differently about them.

 

To those who don’t like what we now call ‘Southern Gospel’ (yes I remember when we just called it gospel, but now regular gospel music has a more African American Urban sound to it), if you don’t like it don’t listen to it.

Yes some of the lyrics are of questionable theological value (but then so are some of our hymns). And some of the groups have sold out after big bucks (Oak Ridge Boys). But most are just honoring God with their talents and using a music style native to our area.

Teased Hair? Never seen it other then Guy Penrod, and the Gaither Vocal Band is not a traditional southern gospel group. (And they will tell you that) I would also add that ‘drop kick me Jesus’ is not a southern Gospel tune. If an artist is a mainstream country or pop artist (i.e. those JFox1 listed) I would be very wary of their gospel songs. It seems like whenever record sales fall they want to release a gospel album to make some money. Any true Southern Gospel artist could have made a lot more money had they gone contemporary or secular, but they instead held true to their faith and decided to honor God with their talents and use them to spread the gospel of Christ.

Some Southern Gospel songs are definitely not ‘church music.’ What I mean is there are some songs that I really enjoy listening to on cd or at a Saturday night concert but I would not want them performed Sunday Morning in church. Most Southern Gospel quartets due a lot of churches but they also do other venues. There is a big difference to the performance. I first heard Gold City at a church service and was not impressed at all. Later I herd them at a city auditorium on a Saturday night and they were unbelievable. They are one of my favorite groups now. I really like the Primitive Quartet, but I have heard them at church and in an auditorium and they are much better out of church.

The Kingdom Heirs are awesome but didn’t Dolly Parton put that group together? That is probably enough to turn off some BB members. I have not heard the Tribute Quartet yet but a couple friends of mine have and told me they were great. I believe they were all members of other groups that “retired.” Isn’t that right? Wasn’t there lead singer part of the Cathedrals before they folded up? I also like the Inspirations and the McKameys. I used to love the Florida Boys but I think they retired.

My favorite group right now is the Jody Brown Indian Family from Robbinsville NC. For those of you familiar with this group Jody retired last year and his son and daughter are carrying the group forward with his son’s wife doing the back up vocals. Jody’s daughter Stephanie writes 90% of the songs and has changed the sound of the group. They are not as traditional as they used to be but they have a new youthful energy that I think is awesome. If you get a chance to hear them you should go.

 

This is exactly how I feel. I'm not a big Southern Gospel fan - I'm more of a Contemporary Christian - Praise and Worship fan. But just 'cause SG isn't my cup of tea, I'm not going to waste any time trying to bash it. As long as it lifts up Christ and not man, I'm all for it!

I see that you like Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Me too---I really am addicted to Bluegrass gospel. I like some of the old Southern Gospel music--before they got really contemporary--the old groups, like the Cathedrals, The Happy Goodmans, The Ruppes, and the Hemphills. There are more but this is just some of the groups I like. I also love the Easter Brothers and the Primitive Quartet--both great Bluegrass gospel groups.

Doyle Lawson is definately a throwback, to the old-time gospel radio shows. And his shows are excellent, and he's always happy to "shake & howdy" with folks after the show. He's a class act, and his love for Jesus Christ is very evident.
