On the Pastoral forum confusion was evident over what is/is not an "apostle" from the NT and for the church today.

I am directing folks here (the Pastoral Forum is fellowship, not designed for the debate that I feel will happen here momentarilly!!) :D

An Apostle is an "office" no longer in operation.
Eph.2:20 says they are part of the foudation of the church.
"Seeing the Lord" seems to have been a requirement for most of them.(1Cor. 9:1)
    It was a specific calling.(1 Cor. 1:1)
Specific signs verified their office.(2 Cor. 12:12 Acts 1:43 Acts 4:33)
This and other offices which are in 1Cor. 12 are part of progressive revelation in redemptive history and were for a specific time for a specific reason. This new revelation of the church and the New Covenant needed these offices to establish the truths which were not revealed in the previous dispensation.(Eph.3:1-7)
    Soli Deo Gloria.

Don't worry Dr. Bob I, for one, don't get upset over opinions (just convictions). IMHO, Sola-Scriptura, hit the nail square enough on the head to do the job. I particularly was impressed with "...must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection." from Acts 1:21-22 and with "And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus:" in Acts 4:33.

yup... they saw, were called directly and ordained by Jesus. Specific time, people, purpose and had certain signs they could perform.

Is there any distinction in apostolic offices among those who saw Jesus in the flesh (the 12), those who saw Jesus after He had risen (Paul), and those chosen as replacement apostles (Matthias)?

For the special "office" of the 12, there were very specific reguirements.
Evidently there was and should be a clear distinction of an "office" (love that word, bishopric - Greek: Supervisory position like a foreman of a work crew) that the 11+1 had.

An Apostle is a Missionary, we have millions of them today around the world. So yes the office of the Apostle is ongoing in this form.
