On many threads on the BB board and on the active thread "But it is just lunch" right now this verse often pops in, followed by little constructed scenarios where weaker Christians see people entering bars, or stores next to porn shops, or eating with another married woman etc.

It just leads me to ask . . .
WHERE DO YOU GUYS LIVE that you go bumping into each other all the time? I work in Austin (about 600,000) and live just north of it in Round Rock (about 65,000) and I don't think I EVER have run into someone in a restaurant, store, walgreens, etc that I recongized or who would know me. Everyone I know at work, or church, or friends, I see when I am at those locations or when we get together, but I have never seen them by chance. When I was in graduate school in Palo Alto, I think ONCE I was having dinner with my wife at Olive Garden and there was another couple from our Church there. We thought that was pretty coincidental.

I grew up in a town of 3600 and I guess a ran into a lot of people there that I knew. Perhaps it is just a small town thing?

I am amazed at how FEW people I run into from my churches. Only have 5 grocery stores (50k in Casper), 1 library, etc etc. I do all the shopping, etc and can go thru the stores week after week and NEVER see anyone from either church.

Of course, if I were to go into a bar or into the only porn shop in town, ALL 300 would probably witness it!!

In 7th grade we lived in Indiana. There was an 8th grade bully at my school. He made it a point to taunt me everyday. One day I stood up to him and he punched me in the chest. I think he cracked my sternum.

Every summer, we would travel to Orlando to visit the grandparents. We stopped at a greasy spoon for a quick bite. I went to the bathroom and guess who was there. Yep, the bully. I'm glad I was in the restroom because I almost wet my britches. He was shocked to see me there too. We walked out to the parking lot and talked till we left.

He was not the same person and never bullied me again. When school started, he told everyone about us meeting. I had a knew friend.

All too often I see some legalists use this Verse used as some sort of "elastic clause."

I always think (right or wrong) of the following passage when Christians wrangle over the litanies and defintions of the "appearance of evil".

    Judges 12
    5 And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;
6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.

Some people must not know very many people, LOL! [IMG]

I've bumped into people I know even when I've been on vacation out of state, LOL! [IMG]

But Jesus is watching all the time anyway. ;)

PS: Dr. Bob, if you and I were ever to meet for coffee in Alaska, I guarantee you we'd run into somebody you know, LOL! :D

I always have to be "well behaved" in Walmart. [IMG] If I am going to see someone I know in this city, it will be at Walmart. [IMG]

We live in a small town (11,000), which is the only town in a mostly-rural county of 33,000 (we have a few very small villages).

Our church is the area "mega church," with 1500 members (very conservative), so we see people from church all the time. In addition, I teach at the county high school, so I am always running into parents and students.

As for bullies, Gib, when I was in second grade, we had a really nasty bully at our school. He was in 4th grade, but should have been in 7th, so he was the dominant figure on the playground. He attacked me one day, and was on top of me beating me mercilessly. I raised my head to his chest, and got a mouthful of flesh, and would not let go. I actually bit a rather large plug out of him! He ran, crying, to the office.

Well, they were going to expel me, so they called my dad from the mines to pick me up. When dad saw how big the boy was, he told me "next time, bite him twice!" He then proceeded to read the riot act to the principal. I was not expelled. No one ever bothered me on that playground again.

All too often I see some legalists use this Verse used as some sort of "elastic clause." </font>[/QUOTE]Even if you throw our that verse, we're still left with these:

    1Pe 1:15
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

    Mt 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

We are commanded to be holy and perfect, just like God
