Apple Computer Life is about to END.

But, their desktops decreased 23% that is a huge decline. What's up with that?

While we're discussing OS's that think they're on the verge of making it, but really aren't... Linux (any flavor) must be on the verge. It will finally be the OS that gets human beings to change their nature and try something new

 

I've admired Apple for a long time as the ]['s were some of my earliest computing machines (and I LOVE my iPod!) I've considered buying an Apple desktop for my personal computer since the change to OS-X as I've been a long time FreeBSD fan (very long time, very serious fan.) I thought it would be a really powerful and stable platform. What has been the major deterrent though is the unrealistic pricing. I can get a very formidable brand name PC for the same price... and oh yeah, have enough left to buy a second one too :smilewinkgrin:

I've put up with the whole Apple vs. PC thing for a very long time as early on in my career I had to do desktop support and later LAN installation/support (I'm waaaaay beyond desktops now, thankfully.) The big turn off to me for the Mac (besides the cult-like, uber-defensive adherents) was the "dumbing down" of the technology. This changed with OS-X and got me excited *but* there is that whole price thing.

Now if the Intel chips make them cheaper, I may change one of my personal PCs eventually (oh how I want to run Garageband); but I got to admit, I'm in love with the Windows Media Center platform now and am desperately wishing my 37" tube TV would burn up so I could replace it with a flat-panel.

As for the Linux thing... there aren't enough people that hate Microsoft to support their grandparents/neighbors/in-laws using it as a desktop O/S to make it go "main-stream". I'm not knocking Linux, I started with it when it was a 2 floppy FREQ on FidoNet and watched it grow (although still never to the stability of FreeBSD,) but no matter how much candy-coating you apply, it still isn't "there" yet (and neither is FreeBSD as far as desktops are concerned,) and it's not catching up as quick as some would like. Oh yeah, and the cult-like, uber-defensive adherents.

Personally though, as far as technology platform wars... I just use the right tool for the job considering all factors, I don't hate Microsoft/Apple/Etc., and it's made me pretty successful. On the other hand I've watched many "haters" fall by the way-side, or at the very least, they've made themselves where nobody takes them seriously (and hence have never progressed very far career wise.)

I completely agree. I was hoping the rolling eyes would convey my sarcasm. I see a lot of similarity between the Linux and Mac groups in this respect. They both think they are on the verge of taking over, when really, neither one is. They are good though, linux innovations tend to eventually make it to the PC (read: MS) market.

 

Microsoft may be an evil empire, and Windows may have its problems, but face it... to have 90%+ of the world market share, they've done something right.

Oh, there are days when I'd like to take Windows out behind the barn, but I know better. Every program I have is built to run on Windows. As well as every game.

I'd like to see a Mac run Battlefield 2...

 

They will now. My dads new Mac Mini I set up for him...dual boots to Windows XP.

Yes and no. Do you know just how they got the original deal with IBM?

They lied, and they are proud of that fact. They sold DOS when they didn't even have DOS.
AFTER they made the sale, they went to a friend who was a programer in Seattle and bought this lousy little OS he had written for 50k. Of course, he thought that was great, not knowing that Bill and Co had already licensed, not sold the same software to IBM for millions.

Sure, there are more titles for windows, but there are some great Mac only stuff as ell.
Now that you can run windows full speed on a Mac...there is MUCh less reason not to get one IMO.

I-tunes and quick-time both opened up back doors the last time I 'upgraded' their new darth vader version.

I can watch apple send my computer data (communicate) to the home world anytime I want, or I can uninstall it.

I don't like bill's method, but to call a business deal a lie would mean that you would need to implicate apple's acquisition of windows technology as well . . .

 

BTW, I don't use APple because they are a bunch of upstanding Christians.

I just use them because they make better products.
Someone just mentioned that MS must have done something right to be where they are.
Yes, they did, they got the deal with IBM.
They lied to get it, told IBM they had something they didn't, but they were able to get it in time to make the deal.

 

When Apple starts selling Intel Core Duo systems across their desktop lines, their desktop sales will go back up. I understand why people aren't buying the PowerPC desktops because they are waiting for the Intel versions.

 

I'm hoping they'll be a lot cheaper... but if people were willing to pay the prices before, they may not lower them. If they want to move beyond the current membership of the Cult of Mac, they're going to have to move their price-points.

And you can get a Mac Mini for $519..how much less to you want? I mean who else has a decent loaded system with wireless and bluetooth and the works for that kind of price?
