Apple or Microsoft

Microsoft formed almost one year before Apple. Commodore began in the 1950s as a typewriter company.

IBM has them all beaten... they were formed in 1888.

 

Apple started in 1976 but became an official corporation with proper funding in 77 and introdeced the Apple II that year.
Microsoft started in 75 but didn't really start as we know them today until 81 when they made the deal to sell DOS to IBM (something they didn't even have, they bought it from a programmer in Seattle for $50k)

From a product standpoint:

Apple II 1977
IBM PC with DOS 1981
Apple Macintosh 1984
Windows 3.1 (first widely used Windows) 1992
Mac OS X 2001
Windows Vista 2007

 

You will see the original PC was about 4 years behind the Apple II
The First widely use version of windows with a graphical interface was about 8 years behind the Mac and Vista is basically 65 years behind Mac OS X.

It all started with a guy name Herman Hollerith who needed a better way to compute the census of 1890. As the U.S. grew, it was taking longer and longer to calculate the census. The 1880 census took more than 7 years to calculate (!) and from the trends, the 1890 census might take until 1900 to complete. (One of the reasons the census is vitally important to American life is that political representation is determined by the number of citizens in each state, for the Electoral College, and Congressional district. Without a trustworthy census, confidence in the democratic form of government would likely wane since newly populated areas would have less represetation than others.

Using his primative punch card reader system, he was able to calculate the 1890 U.S. census in only 2.5 years.

 

As you have shown on another thread, the Mac OS X, is derived from NeXTStep...and that's been a good 15 years ago, no?

 

Whoa, I said 65 years...lol.
I meant 5 or 6 years.

NeXT was started in the 80s but can't remember jsut when, I think 87 or 88.

Moderen Macs are more like modern NeXt systems that modern Macs.

In many ways, OS X is simply the third generation and a decendent of both

Well...let me give my list.

IBM is by far the oldest company. But IBM made main frames. The 1st microcomputer was made either by Radio Shack or..Steve Wozniak (later to be apple)...all in 1976. The Apple Computer, later to be called Apple 1 was in a wood box.

Microsoft was started in 1975, but was only a software company. The biggest thing I can say about Gates was that he made the 1st good Basic. Steve Wozniak made the 1st DOS and wrote it in if I remember right 2 days. Wozniak had a lot of 1st.

In 1978-1980 there were a ton of new starts. My 1st computer was Astrocade from the year 1979. It had 4k Yes i did say.."k". It didn't come with a keyboard, but rather a keypad. it had a tape drive, and some people added Apple computers to drive it. I added a keyboard that was made with a wooden box and had to wire it in. I also added 16k and I thought I was big time. I wrote a lot of programs. It had a funny basic called Zgrass made by Dr Wang.

Some other older machines... TRS80 (the Radio shack machine), and does anyone remember the TI? They sold the TI at kmart. It was a good machine, but no one bought it. It ran logos. Or how about that little Sincare? Sincare was from England I think. I still would like to have a Osborne 1. The Osborne was the first portable compute. This thing was HUGE!!! It had a little 5 inch screen and 2 big floppies. What were they? 5.5 inches?? I still have a machine that runs only the 7 inch size. I can't find them any more...and there is no way to up grade. Its a big drum scanner

Most of these older machines ran z80 /8080 procressers...or the old 6502-6502c procressers. I had no idea how slow these things were till I bought a old appleIII on ebay for my collection. Man...they are slow.

Anyway...IBM was 1st..
I feel Apple was the 1st PC Company (maybe Radio Shack)
MS never did make a computer.

And...it was Xerox that we have to think for the OS we see today.
