Apple v IBM

I've used both, and Mac is more user friendly if you ask me.

Non-mac doesn't equal IBM I know what you mean though. Mine's a homemade PC.

 

You're still a young'un, so you may not know that all Windows PCs are technically clones of an old IBM operating system and an IBM-specific hardware configuration. As far as personal computers go (not mainframes, mini-computers, PDA devices and such), just about every computer that is not made by Apple is an IBM or IBM clone.

...and it's almost certainly an IBM clone. I'm very sorry to hear that you don't have a Mac. There's alway time to get one though. You're life will be better for making the switch!

 

yeah, i guess i am young i put this computer together myself though, which cost less than $1000 canadian. i don't think any macs sell for that little and being a poor student, i have to do what i can. i'm quite happy with my computer... i did rebel against intel though and went for a t-bird, if that makes you any happier

Yes! If you have to go for an IBM clone, the AMD processor is the way to go.

1. Building your computer is the way to go so you don't have to pay to use a MS operating system. Every PC user and their mother should be using Linux at this point.

2. Apple, though not as bad as MS, is guilty of oppression as well. I personally think that Apple is not as bad simply because they don't have the market share to flex their muscle. If Apple did have MS's market share, they would be just as bad.

If I had to choose a PC or an Apple (hardware), I would choose an Apple. If I was choosing it because of what I wanted to run, I would probably get a PC and load it with Linux. Though, I have to admit, OS X is making me think twice!

I'm all about the PC. I use Windows, somewhat begrudgingly - I really like DOS. *sigh* Back in the day . . . .

Graphics programs are much better for the Mac, at least they used to be, but my thinking is that if you don't need high-res for graphic work, you don't need a Mac. Yes, Macs have come much further than the IBM clones in terms of compactness and the like, but it's really not worth the expense to me.

 

This is so funny. IBM and Mac were started by the same people. I guess no one is up on their computer history.

Apple (who produces the Mac) was started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in their garage in the late 1970s. IBM (International Business Machines) was started in the late 1800s.

In no way are the founders the same.

Perhaps you are thinking of the GUI (Graphic User Interface) that was pioneered by the Xerox labs, refined and brought to market by Apple with the "Lisa" computer (a commercial failure) and then the Macintosh in 1984? Apple gained so much popularity with users in the late 1980s, that Microsoft started imitating the Apple desktop.

While there is not as much difference in the GUIs as there used to be, the Macintosh version is still superior and more stable -- I am much more productive when working on a Mac than I am working on a Windows PC. I use both for hours every day, but I wish my job would let me ditch my Windows 2000 and XP boxes and let me use my Mac.

Even if you don't get a Mac, you desperately need to upgrade Windows! Windows 2000 is probably the best version of Windows currently available.

In Mac OS X, crashes are extremely rare. I have had one crash since March 2001, and that because I didn't let UNIX do the system housekeeping for over a year. But the system recovered automatically and I didn't lose any data. I've had no problems since that crash.

 

In 1984 I purchased my first personal computer. I bought an Apple IIe complete with Epson printer for $2400. I used it until 1989 when I bought my first IBM Clone.

Was I ever disappointed. My Apple IIe with my Appleworks program would run circles around my Clone and WordPerfect.

But two things kept me in the IBM camp.

1. Price
2. Open Architecture

Since that first computer in 1984 I have owned 6 Apples and 7 "IBM"'s. I'm now running a Dell Pentium 4 as my main computer with various other systems on a wired and wireless network.

I think the one thing that kept Apple from being the most widely used computer in the world was the proprietary approach they took in the early days.

I was just thinking about my Dads IIe that he bought around the same time. It was the first computer I ever used. I remember when he bought an expasion card that gave him 1 meg of RAM. To access that extra RAM you actually had to create a virtual disk called a RAM disk. It allowed you to get the information from your 5.25 floppys into RAM so that the floppy drives didn't have to be accessed and you didn't have to keep changing disks. At that time we thought you will never need more RAM than 1 Meg. Now we think that you can't even start up without at least 128 Meg.

My Dad did't get a P.C. until about 1996 because he didn't want to give up Appleworks. When he did eventually swich to a P.C. then he found a PC program that is essentially a clone of Appleworks called Superworks. He still does all his WP, Spreadsheet, and DB work on Superworks.

First time I've posted here, but I'm sending this on my mac (OS X) and I've got to say that I love it. It took a short while going from a PC to the iMac but now when I have to use a PC I find it not as user friendly and can't wait to get home to this one!

The only things I find annoying with the mac is how expensive the software is and how it doesnt open all PC files.
