We recently had a revival where the preacher attacked the other versions and basically said the KJV was the only right version. He specifically attacked the NASB. What are your thoughts?

...and beside that, is Bible Version the major point of having revival meetings? Was that his message at the time, or was it just something he threw in off the cuff?

    Topic moved to Versions Forum.

BUT, am allowing this to stay open HERE and deal with the question of WHAT EVANGELISTS SHOULD SAY. As a "guest speaker" or "conference speaker" in many churches, I want to be sensitive to the feelings of pastors and direction of a church.

I just spoke yesterday in a KJVpreferred church. Of course, I translated the text (as my habit to do) and wrote it in 2004 English. But actually read the KJV1769 Oxford revision. I would NEVER think of telling them they should all get NASB's or even NKJV's.

Every church should ask upfront as to the personal beliefs of EVERY guest speaker, period. The KJVO stance of this preacher would not have been a surprise if the church had done so.

Besides, a revival (as most define it) is a time of energizing the church body, not creating anomosity and division by attacking different translations of the bible from the pulpit. I am flabbergasted that a visiting speaker would take the liberty to do so, unless that was the stance of the church in which he was speaking.

It is comparable to walking in my house and lighting up a cigarette. Since no one in my family smokes, we would be offended, and I would ask you to take it outside. But this instance is much more serious. And deadly.

    In Christ,
    Trotter

As I have only filled other men's pulpets, I am careful to ask what the congregation is used to having the pastor use. I will try to use that translation, if possible, to avoid confusion or animosity. God sends me to edify and deliver His word, not to break down communication and cause division.

    Good Posts!!
I have been in so many churches over the years and heard so many evangelists that these divisive comments just go right over my head. Unfortunately, many relatively young christians don't really know what to think.

Evangelists should be required to take a lesson in TACT. Some think that being offensive is part of the calling and we are not talking about "the offense of the gospel".

He did this in a revival? Honestly, I believe he missed a wonderful opportunity to PREACH. This is tragic that a man wasted the God-given opportunity to lead people to spiritual renewal and revival.

Sadly, many "evangelists" have given up that calling and are trying to insert their pet doctrines or practices into every message.

Had a speaker say he would preach on TV (against it, I assume) in every message. We asked him not to come.

Divisive topics such as dress codes, bible versions, divorce/remarriage, calvinism, legalism, et al should NEVER be the focus of a speaker outside of the pastor who is leading and teaching the flock.

(Note: I was asked by a pastor of a "evangelical" church to come and do 5-day meeting on Prophecy, since his denomination didn't really have any stand on it and he wanted a "strong voice" to teach. I am an extension of the pulpit ministry of the pastor, so was pleased to "jump in" on a controversial area.)

What he preached on shows you his focus. And it is not Christ.

Did'nt the Pastor and "evangelist " discuss any of the form that the services would take? Why would he have not asked the Pastor about his congregations spiritual needs? An evangelist has to have more than five sermons available to him.Why would'nt he be talking about stewardship, personal witnessing, living a holy life ,and rededication? He should be talking to Christians in need of "reviving", being re-invigorated,re-energized.The evangelist should be reaching out and giving you a vision as a church.
You should be having a great time in church. It's time to sing the old time revival songs,it's time to get your ameners' warmed up and swung into action. This should be the best time you've had in sometime.
You should not be hearing about bible version controversy there are more important things that need to happen during a revival.

Interesting... I have had the honor of "preaching" as a guest speaker to numerous fellowships over the last 15 years. AOG, IFCA, Baptist, Methodist, COG, Elim and more...

I do not recall one time- whether it be a contemporary fellowship settng or strictly old-tyme religion type setting- ever hearing objections to my exclusive use of the KJV.

Maybe its because the context of my messages focus on the coming Bema Seat Judgment for all believers! I suppose that revealing the "motives" behind why we say and do the things we do in the name of our Lord preoccupies more of their thought processes at that particular moment than the version of text I quote from! You think? [IMG]

P.S. I just love that little "Junior Member" tag! It's been awhile since anyone addressed me in a term other than "Sir." I love it!

I've heard a few visiting preachers during revivals, evangelistic meetings and the such, say that they can say things that the church pastor can't. Their reasoning has been that they'll be gone next week, so it's okay for the people to get mad and that it was something they needed to hear.

We had a fill-in pastor come on a Sunday morning and spend 10 mins defending his Bible version. He wasted valuable time.

it is true that evangelists today preach such deep doctrinal issues. I remember back when the evangelist's job was the EVANGELIZE, that is preach mainly to the LOST! I feel that an evangelist should preach one of two messages, 1, salvation 2, encouraging heart reviving.

The last evangelist we had at our Church was for a revival. We had several lost people attend and hear all about the evils of not tithing. Please leave doctrine to the Pastors!

Obviously you do NOT use the KJV only, or you wouldn't dare use the MV word "bema"!

And I've found few care if someone uses only the KJV(whatever revision). They care about being called names or having their translations denigrated by some who would say it is the "only" text.

That's the rub. We have a whole forum to discuss it.
