The Doolittle raid was a huge fillip for our forces & quite a shock to Japan. Although it did little damage, several wise Japanese said it was a portent of things to come.

It also forced Japan's hand into striking at Midway where the war in the Pacific turned. World War II was indeed a time when ordinary Americans accomplished extraordinary deeds.

How many of that gang must be left...man, are we ever losing our WWII vets.

Not hijacking but I read a fascinating article last week (will post when I can)...there's actually a couple dozen WWI vets still alive in the US.

I think there are 16 of Doolittle's Raiders left.

I was able to meet (twice actually) Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. That was about 10 years ago and 8 years ago. He was still pretty sharp.

    This is very true.
BTW, how many of you have been to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC?

    Regards,

    BiR,

I saw a program about it on PBS last week that was excellent. I've thought before that there are getting to be too many monuments in DC lately but the program sold me on the monument. The accomplishments of that generation in that war deserve to be celebrated.

I hope all is well with you.

I am amazed that we got a Vietnam memorial before a WWII one. But I am glad it is there. Can't wait to see it someday, as I haven't been to DC for a few years.
