Are any of you old enough?

For me, it was "Superman: The Movie". I got my mother to excuse me from Monday night choir practice so I would stay home and watch it. It was the talk of the town when it premiered on TV.

 

Dr. Bob always tells people I'm older than dirt but he's older than me by a few years.... We got a t.v. when I was 7. Other neighbors had one before us but the big to do was to go downtown and stand outside a store like Western Auto who left a t.v. going in the window, with the sound piped outside, and watch some of the shows. T.V. was only on a few hours a day back then. Stations played the National Anthem when they 'signed off' and then had a test pattern on the screen until the next viewing hours.


NO.... we would never miss church back then for any t.v. show! The Wizard of Oz is from 1937 I believe.

I think I am older than television!

Seriously, we lived too far from Dallas, TX, the nearest television station to receive any shows.

Finally, we got tall, tall, antennaes so we could see black and white snow.

My mother would not have let us miss church for nothing.....

 

I'm old enough . We had one of the first TV's in our town. Had to run a line high up on a hill just to get reception from the nearest station (about 75 miles away as the crow flies). I was only about 2 or 3 at the time but I do know this, my parents wouldn't miss church for any TV show. As a matter of fact they didn't miss for hardly anything. Not out of legalism just out of a sense of priorities. They would only miss for little things like, my mother breaking her back or my father having a heart attack. Vacations, weather, visitors, sports, etc., were never even considered. I always hated that when I was growing up but now respect it tremendously.

 

I'm old enough...I remember the test pattern Diane posted, and the National Anthem being played when the stations signed off for the night!

We had a small black and white TV, and it was a LONG TIME before I knew Howdy Doody had red hair!!

Our "family night" was Saturday night and we watched Gunsmoke! It came on at 9 p.m., and my parents let my brother and me stay up until it was over!!

However, we did NOT miss church to watch ANYTHING on TV. Church always came first...Sunday morning, night, Wednesday night, and anything in between! I remember getting irritated about it because, according to me, we were the "ONLY ONES" who couldn't miss church to watch something special on TV. However, habits were formed, and now I'm glad my parents were so insistent on us attending church.
