    Are Baptists judgmental?

    Should we become politically correct?

Should we let non-denominationals and Catholics tell us what to believe?

Yes.....very. But then again, so is the rest of humanity.

You'll have to explain that to me.

We are a stubborn lot (not always a good thing). They couldn't do it even if they all banded together and made a union of themselves.

    Wow

    You stole my answer!

PC doesn't mis well with a message that most of the world will reject. We are called to spread the Gospel, and I can't think of a PC way to tell someone that they must accept Christ for face an eternity in hell.

No denomination, or non-denominational church, is going to tell me what to believe-- and I include Baptists in that. I will allow God, through the Holy Spirit to tell me what to believe. I will read God's Word and allow it to dictate my theology.

    Yes, No, No

Now, Judgement is frequently perceived as wrong, but as Scarlett pointed out, we are humans so we judge. I make judgements -- Is this A material, F material. Does this kid meet dress code (it's sometimes fuzzier than you'd think).

What people don't like is that we have a standard.

To the "judgmental" question -- I am reminded of a former pastor of mine, of whom it was said, in the aftermath of his third forced termination, "He was right in all the wrong ways". It is so easy, particularly when you are in the pulpit, to say what is true in such a way that you close the ears of those you are trying to instruct.

As for the "will we let others tell us what to believe" issue -- certainly most of us as Baptists would agree with the individualistic answers that are coming, along the lines of "I make up my own mind". But we do need to remember that during this past 20 centuries there have been persons with wisdom, insight, and spiritual power, from whom we can learn. How impoverished we would be if we refused to learn from Aquinas, Francis of Assissi, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, on and on -- without swallowing everything they say or accepting the insitutional expressions of church within which they lived. A plea, if you will, for us to know church history, the history of doctrine, and/or the grand sweep of the church's devotional life.

    So true.

"Don't tell me what I should believe because I have soul liberty. But you should believe A, B, C, D ...... because you are obviously wrong and I am right."

I'd say double standards are pretty rampant in some baptist circles.

However, today, many christians are so terrified of being called 'judgmental, or 'intolerant' that they are mute and totally lacking in biblical discernment, or to judge 'righteous judgment'!
This fear has had an extreme negative effect in our churches where many just look the other way and ignore blatant sin and pastors can so desire not to offend that they dont preach on the eternal lasting effects of sin and the need for repentance! That might affect the numbers and also the $ if such biblical scriptures were preached without compromise!
Are christians concerned for each other enough to confront in love?

When we go out to Fort Worth an Friday nights, we are constantly accused of being judgmental. Now, when someone does that, I just raise my voice a little and ask 'Are you judging me? This guy just judged me!' That usually shuts them up ;)

I have seen a myriad of christians, myself included, who confront others, both saved and lost, and I have never seen it done in true Christ-like love.

    Especially on the Baptist Board.

Confronting others is not the issue....confrontation is necessary....getting the beam out of our own eye first before we rant and rave about the speck in someone else's eye is the issue.

We're not to judge hypocritically or self-righteously, or harshly!

However we must discern between dogs and swine!

We're not blind! We are fruit inspectors, or at least fruit observers!

Interesting that the OP juxtaposes judgementalism and being politically correct.

I would think that one could be non-judgemental and still not be politically correct by definition.

I think that there are many "baptists" who are very judgemental (refering to condemnation, not discernment) in their attitudes and are repulsed by political correctness. I happen to think that all believers should reject both practices as neither edify or expand the Kingdom.
