    Sure looks that way.

Less Than Half of Americans Celebrate Nation's Independence on July 4th

(CNSNews.com) - A recent survey found that only 48 percent of Americans cite independence as the top reason for the 4th of July holiday. Zogby International polled 1,884 people on June 28 to 29. It found that 33 percent of respondents see the holiday as an opportunity to spend time with friend and family, while 6 percent see it as a day off from work, and 2 percent see it as a break from the routine to allow some summer travel. Along party lines, 65 percent of Republicans polled say they use the holiday to celebrate America's independence from England, while 30 percent of Democrats said the same. Almost half of Independents agreed. Fifty-five percent of men celebrate the nation's independence on the Fourth of July, compared to 42 percent of women. Fifty-five percent of people age 65 and older specifically celebrate the nation's independence, while just 40 percent of 18-29-year-olds agreed. Meanwhile, 77 percent of those polled said they would not favor moving the holiday to the first Monday of the month to make it easier to coordinate time off from work, the way some other holidays are treated. About 80 percent say celebrating the Fourth of July on any other day would take away from its meaning. With the rising cost of gas, 78 percent of respondents say they do not plan to travel very far, but most say they cost of gas will have no impact on their decision not to travel.

No, not at all. Anyone can post meaningless data to support their position.

    Terry Herrington said:

"Anyone can post meaningless data to support their position."

Can we BB members now put this quote into other posts that use meaningless data to support their position? Such as those who demand the immediate withdrawal of all US military forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, "simply" because a lot of our men have died over there?

It has seemed to me (over my 53 years) that EVERYONE uses polls to support their own position, even when the data IS worthless. I have especially seen the Left (usually Democrats) tailor-make polls to obtain the data they want, rather than an honest poll. (I am not saying the Right does NOT do that. I have just noticed it more with the Left). Questions can always be designed to get a biased answer, and good pollsters know how to do it. Honest pollsters will also NOT do it!

I cannot say whether the poll cited in the OP is an honest poll. I CAN say that the majority of people I known ARE celebrating the 4th of July to honor the men and women who keep our country free, as well as the FACT that Independence Day was established because we have independence from Great Britain.

May all of us enjoy this Independence Day!

What do you think would account for the huge difference in reasons to celebrate Independence Day?

How one celebrates Independence Day is meaningless as to "how patriotic one is".

I contend that those who are standing aside, even rooting the Bush administration along, as our civil liberties are shredded are much less patriotic than those who are sounding the clarion call that the U.S. constitution should be obeyed by the executive branch.

People celebrate Independence Day in many ways, but I think most everyone would remember the significance. I may get together with family, cook out, make ice cream, go see fireworks, or whatever, but I reflect on the meaning of the day. It has nothing do do with being patriotic or not. For myself, I don't believe in the jingoistic type of patriotism, that my country is always right, always the best, just because I am a citizen. I believe patriotism has an element of pride in the nation, but also the obligation to be vigilant about liberty, including infringement by the government. Patriotism demands dissent where appropriate.

You didn't address the central point of the poll. It's not how, it's why.

After all, it's Independence Day, why would democrats not recognize it as such? And celebrate it as such?

According to the poll, a huge majority of democrats don't celebrate our independence on Independence Day. Why?

According to your poll, carpro, 35% of your fellow Republicans don't celebrate our independence on Independence Day. For a party that when it is in electoral difficulty so often tries to wrap itself in the American flag that's an awfully high percentage.

Maybe you need to answer the question about over a third of your own party members first.

I have to ask again...what does recognizing the genesis of the holiday have to do with patriotism?

Maybe it's time the demopublicans and republicrats wrapped themselves in the flag they really serve this fourth of July. Like this one. [IMG]

    Or this one. [IMG]

Agree with you there, poncho. Neither the Democratic or Republican parties care about the Constitution or even about the body politic of these United States. They are all pretty much treasonous traitors.

Well, there you go: generally, the call is to have our troops withdrawn from Iraq, not Afghanistan. And not "simply" because too many have died.

The ole confirmation bias which is that we notice & remember that which confirms what we already believe and discount & forget that which contradicts it. For instance, the Bush-Rove campaign made generous use of push-polls against opponents, Republicans and Democrats both. In fact, as I recall, his campaign polls against McCain were particularly vicious: voters in South Carolina reportedly were asked "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" (linkie) People who then saw him with his adopted Bangladeshi daughter would likely assume that he actually had fathered an illegitimate child.

Of course, one person's campaign shouldn't sully the good name of Republican, except the ole confirmation bias kicks in. :)

Zogby has a good reputation. Link to poll results.

Hurrah for the ACLU!! Here's to the lawyers: whoohoo!

Impossible. I am not affiliated in any way with any political party.

However, that 35% bothers me as well, but relatively speaking , twice as many democrats are not celebrating our independence on Independence Day. That kind of blew me away. :tear:

It appears that democrats are defensive about their lack of patriotism for good reason.

    Polling vs. Patriotism

    Daisy,

I have heard a LOT of local Democrats calling for the removal of ALL troops anywhere on foreign soil, back to our own country. (To be honest, they have also seemed to confuse Europe with "our own soil", but I suppose that is due to the public education they have received. )

My point was that polls can be twisted. Pollsters during the last presidential election campaign repeatedly called my home, but only took my answers while I was answering the way they wanted! As soon as I responded against their own favorite candidate or view (or for an opponent), they hung up on me. Thus, any results they reported were skewed to their own preconceived idea of what the answers should be. THIS IS DISHONEST POLLING.

Truthful and honest pollsters would refuse to do any such thing. Truthful and honest politicians (I know, an oxymoron  ) would prefer to hear what the constituents want to say. Truthful and honest news reporters (another oxymoron :tear: ) would report only the news, not skew the report to the left or the right.

Zogby is a reputable polling company. I am not accusing Zogby of any unethical polling. Nor am I accusing ANY specific pollsters of doing this. I am simply stating that polls can be skewed by the pollsters (or the people who hire them), and that I have experienced it.

Is it a lack of patriotism or a lack of show-offiness?

If they were, might it be because certain types of people would use it to bludgeon them with it? Conform to accepted modes of expression or else?

I didn't see anybody showing off at our local parade today. But, according to the poll, a huge majority of democrats in this country would not have attended our little celebration.

Wave a flag every now and then, Daisy.

It may embarrass someone like you, but it won't be fatal. I promise.

I don't think the country that flag represents exists anymore. If it does, it won't much longer. But I'll wave this flag.
