Are The Sons of God Fallen Angels?

Many hold the view that the Sons of God in the Old Testament refer to the line of Seth. However, there is some scriptural and historical evidence that seem to go against that position.

Genesis 6:1-4 - And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

For one, it is already stated in verse 1 that men were already multiplying on the face of the Earth. It seems odd that all of a sudden humans would start producing giants.

Genesis doesn't specify who the Sons of God are, however we can find clues in other places.

It is debated among scholars whether or not the book of Job was written 400 years before Genesis, during the time of Abraham.

Job 38:4-7 - Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof; when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

God speaking to Job states that the Sons of God were present when the foundations of the Earth were being laid, before man was created. If Job was written before Genesis, it may have been understood by Moses and his audience that the Sons of God were indeed fallen angels and there was no need to expound on it.

While not an inspired writing, the Book of Enoch is an ancient piece of Jewish literature with the author’s view that the Sons of God were fallen angels. This may help provide insight as to what the Jews of that day believed.

Some who hold the line of Cain view will bring up a "contradiction" found in the New Testament.

Matthew:22-30 - For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

However, this simply says that angels cannot marry in Heaven. There is no indication that they cannot marry if they leave Heaven.

Jude 1:6 - And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

1 Corinthians 15:50 - Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

Genesis 19:5 - and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

After the angels left Heaven, perhaps some sort of physical transformation took place that allowed them to procreate with human beings. We know that angels can have the appearance of men but what about a change in their genetic makeup? Scripture doesn’t get into detail but whatever it was likely caused their offspring to develop unnatural characteristics.

What have you been reading? Get off the internet for your Bible study!
You've made connections with aspects that don't have anything to do with your question;
You've integrated misinformation.

Scripture isn't a puzzle; God didn't craft his word so we had to connect the dots.

Genesis 6:1-4 continues to intrigue scholars and puzzle readers.
Read it simply rather than attempting to solidify a particular position.
It is not the key to interpreting the Bible.

* Don't be lead into interpretations that depend upon modern understandings of a word. The word, "giant", doesn't necessarily have to mean an early relative of the Jolly Green Giant (ho, ho ho)
* The book of Job was probably transmitted orally for a long time before it was finally transcribed.
* Don't automatically presume that the phrase, "sons of God", maintains the exact same meaning (same goes for the phrase "son of God")
* Don't rely upon the 'Book of Enoch' to support doctrinal decisions; there's a reason it's not in our canon. Any use by NT authors was due to simple connections they made with what it said.
* The habitation of angels is not prioritized in our Scriptures.

God gave His reason for bringing the flood upon the earth. It was not because of supposed fallen angels.

Genesis 6:5-7, And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

The sins of believing mankind aka "sons of God."

You do realize this was the view held by Christians of the early church a LONG time before the internet came around? If I’m buying into “conspiracy theory theology”, then so was Ambrose, Ireneaus, Clement of Rome, and Justin Martyr.

Yes, His reason was because mankind was wicked and I would say that includes intermingling with angels among other things.

Which tells us that interpretations, even those held by prominent theologians, can occasionally be wildly off base.
Speculation, if rooted in a proper hermeneutical method, can be useful, however there is so much on the internet that is designed to simply distract and discourage one from more important things.

Paul write to Timothy,
The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions. 1 Tim. 1:5-7 ESV

To answer the question in the title of the post - no!

As I stated in the OP, the book of Job defines Sons of God as angels. I’m comparijng scripture with scripture.
I agree. But I am not persuaded Job was written before the books of Moses.
Genesis account is explicit. Genesis 6:5-7, says nothing about fallen angels.

Note Jesus' argument about men and angels regarding the resurrection, Matthew 22:30, For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Besides that, the angels called sons of God in Job are not fallen.

Supposed. But no such evidence in the written word of God. So I no longer hold the fallen angels view.

I agree that the sons of God as described in Genesis 2:2-4 ( who procreated with the daughters of men ), are indeed fallen angels;
Whereas the sons of God described in Job 1:6 and Job 2:1, for example, I understand to be angels in general.
Finally, I understand "the sons of God" as described in Romans 8:14, and those described as "sons" in Galatians 4:6 to be the elect...

God's children and "the whosoever believeth on Him" as found in other passages that describe the saints;
All those whom God has saved... every one that was written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world.

In other words, for each and every reference in the Scriptures of "the sons of God", what determines who they are is the context and the details of what is said in each place that we find it.

Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

All entities that are labeled by God in the scriptures as "sons of God" are "created beings, beginning with Adam in Lk 3:38. There is only one exception and that is Jesus Christ. He is the son of God by physical birth and Jehovah is his Father. All born again Christians now are the sons of God by a spiritual birth. John, the apostles said this;

1Jo 3:1 ¶ Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

John was always a male but he was not always a son of God.

Paul says about the new birth these words;

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

If a man is a new creature that means he is a new creation and it is God the Father who makes that ruling to give his Spirit to those who believe the gospel of Christ.

All angels in the angelic realm including the cherubim and seraphim are shown to be males. This means they are not gender free. There were no female angels that saw attractive men in Genesis and bred themselves to them. Angels cannot procreate with one another, all being males. They are a fixed number from Genesis on the 4th day of creation when God created all of them. They are not earthly beings like men but heavenly beings, occupying the second heaven where the stars are located. God wants us to see this and so he has made innumerable shining stars of different sizes and brightness as a metaphor for the angelic race of beings.

All we know for sure is that some of these created beings had intercourse with generated humans and produced a race of giants that affected the gene pool of mankind and by the time we get to Noah, there are only 8 people on earth without corrupted genes.
, or at least 8 people that are saved from perishing in the waters of judgement.

I am going to quote a context so you can see it;

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

The following is not natural between a man and a woman.

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Corruption on the outside because of corruption on the inside

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 ¶ And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

8 ¶ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

No corruption in the bloodline of Noah or his family

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

All the righteous men were dead or translated when the rain began to fall. It began immediately after the death of Methuselah, who lived 969 years, a metaphor for the next time God will deal with men so harshly in the great tribulation on the number 70. The number 70 was prominent when Jesus Christ destroyed Jerusalem and the temple 40 years after he rose from the dead.

The gene pool was pure, it seems, when men settled on this side of God's judgement but Satan found a new way to pollute it through Ham and Canaan, one of his sons. Sexual sins are always present when Satanic corruption sets in.

11 ¶ The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 ¶ And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

2Pe 2:1 ¶ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 ¶ And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 ¶ And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

Only two men in the OT were called the son of God. Adam and Jesus. They are contrasting types in the NT.

Nothing ever changes. For the creation of the devil and his exalted position see Ez 28. Pride got him.

All free will beings are tested.

Sounds to me like he's making a lot of sense from scripture.

God meant for us to meditate on His word, and indeed to 'connect the dots'. Why on earth would you ever discourage anyone from doing that? Sounds to me like you need to pray as David, "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold Wondrous things out of thy law." Maybe God will open YOUR EYES and you'll find your way out of that dry barren Dispy land of literal interpretation that you're in.

Think about this Deacon. David had only a FRACTION of the scripture we have today, and God showed him wondrous from it.

162 I rejoice at thy word, As one that findeth great spoil. Ps 119

It's still held by a large group of mainstream theologians today.

Genesis 6:4, . . . the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, . . .

2 Corinthians 6:15-18, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
