I'd like to know what "affiliate with a church" actually means in the mind of the poll taker. "Back when I was 12, I went to great-aunt Gussie's funeral. I affiliated then, so I reckon I still do."

Since I know a few people that affiliate with churches, I think my answers will have to stay the same :thumbs:

 

People that go to a service on "easter" or Christmas would say they "go to church"

We are not a Christian country anymore but a secular humanist country.

Christianity is the most prominent visible religion of course. But over all, people have become a god unto themselves.

 

I didn't want to miss a good opportunity to agree with you, Dale.

I believe there was a time when one could say we are a Christian country, but that time is long gone, and it's very sad, especially when you consider the fact that we are the closest to being a Christian country.

We are not a Christian country, but....

1. We were founded on Judeo-Christian principles in our legal system
2. We are seen as "Christian" by the world at large

What is interesting is that, in reference to #2, our veneer of religiousness in terms of Christianity is still so much more than the European countries, Australia, or even Canada! So, perhaps in a sense, we are the last outpost of any semblance of what might be mistaken for a Christian nation or culture.

 

Unless you count Vatican City!

We are a post Christian culture... we have to start operating with this in mind... we should operate the way missionaries do on foreign soil.

 

I know exactly what you mean... our denominations missionaries were about to be recalled a couple yrs ago due to lack of funding, but at the last minute... God came through....

But it is still iffy..

With all the controversy in our Denomination, giving to international missions has went down.

If you talk with foreigners they would say we are a Christian nation. That is their image of Christianity. Just as we think of some other nations as Muslim nations they think of us as a Christian nation. I am not convinced that many sitting in thew pews each Sunday have come forward are Christians when it comes right down to a real relationship with God throguh Jesus Christ. The chruches today remind me a lot of the book of Hebrews.

This country was not founded by all Christians. Some were religious though. Some were deists.

We are a religious country. I would say the majority of parents and grandparents would say church is good for their kids. Most of the time a pastor is called to do a funeral.

It is hype to those of use who know what a real Christian is but to those who do not they see us a Christian nation.

 

If you look back into history you will find that the Union was not really founded with religion in mind.
However, at that time, we weren't "One Nation Under God"
At that time, we were 13 sovereign states trying to become established that banded together to aid in that end.

The individual states for the most part has state churches and as such, there could be no national church if the union was to succeed.

This is very important to remember to understand the fact that the individual states were in fact Christian, many having state churches, but ON a federal level, there was official church or religion.

The confusion results from the fact that since 1865 we have been one consolidated nation as opposed to a union of Consolidated states.
