These Things Are Disappearing Because Millennials Refuse To Use Them - Money Pop
I'm one and actually agree with a bunch of that haha. I was talking to the wife the other day about how we're probably the last generation where the internet wasn't a "thing" when we grew up. It existed in its infancy when we were kids, but until age 5 or 6 it wasn't widespread. Cell phones weren't even widespread, just car phones and ham radio phones and if you wanted to call someone or go somewhere you had to memorize phone numbers and addresses. I remember my father having a cell phone, but that was because work gave it to him. Most of my friends parents didn't have one.
We don't use fabric softener, nor have we ever been on a cruise, nor do we do lottery.
A lot of our peers forego the diamond rings because of a combination of poor quality jobs and lack of desire to get what few quality jobs there are. However, I did get the wife a diamond ring though way back in my very early 20s. I had gone to Sears to get some tools, then grabbed some earrings from their jewelry section, then went over to the nextdoor diamond place. I got a great deal too, it was in clearance and dropped from $4500 to $2700.
We're both more traditional though so for me the ring was an external example of her value while for her it was evidence of a man's ability to manage finances and handle a large purchase. She has no interest in any further diamonds though, despite the fact I've broached it.
