Are you old enough to remember........

Yeah I remember that, kids of today miss out on a lot of fun. You then probably will remember having air raid drills in school then too. Like going to the hall and putting our heads against the walls were going to save us from Russia dropping a Nuke :laugh: Or how about glass contact lenses and when somebody lost one everyone had to stay clear until they found it our you might step on it and break it. I remember them even stopping to do that during NFL games, and players and refs all down on their knees looking for it. Yeah good times!

 

Air raid drills? I don't recall any drills. I do remember packing a gas mask and back pack and when the siren sounded we headed to the tube to escape the bombing. I remember German bombers flying over London and dropping real bombs where I lived. No contact lenses. Just wire framed glasses. So much for exciting teen years..........

Amy, if you don't mind my asking, how long ago was that?

Its sounds like it would have been fun. I just can't remember ever doing anything like that when I was a kid or even seeing chicks for sale.

 

We lived on the farm so we had baby chicks around a lot, but don't think any of them had anything to do with Easter. No where near old enough to remember air raid drills(but have seen the video on tv before).
So I guess to answer your question, are you old enough to rememeber.... nope I'm not apparently.

 

I don't know why but I always had gotten the impression from things you have written that we were close in age. I entered grade school during the mid sixties and we routinely had air raid or bomb drills, just as we would have had fire drills.

 

Yes, I not only remember that but used to get one at Easter... don't ask me what my parents did with them afterwards. I don't know but they just disappeared after a few weeks.

Up until 2 years ago, we could buy ducklings at out local feed store. My wife and I love raising them on the lake behind our house. Then they would learn to fly and live on their own. They got married and had babies because now we have lots of ducks!

We quit buy and raising them because we got new carpet. :smilewinkgrin:

 

To remember these things you have to have been in elementary school in the 50's. I was, and I do. I had a pair of chicks that I named chick-a-doodle and chicken-noodle (wasn't that cruel!). I would come home from school at lunch time (yes we came home for lunch and then went back) and take them out of their box, put newspaper down on the living room floor, and let them run around while I cleaned out the box. They grew to be a rooster and a hen, that were later taken to a farm that my uncle knew of.

I can't imagine what today's children would do to those poor creatures.

 

My mom bought my sister and me each a baby chick when we were young. Mine was green and my sister's was pink. Both chicks lived to be adults and they were as mean as snakes! When you walked outside you had to make sure they were not near the door of they would jump on you. Our dog attacked mine and had a nice meal, but my sister's lived into winter. One night my dad came home from work. It was snowing and the now rooster got up on the car vent under the windshield wiper to keep warm. We had company coming and my dad saw them drive by, missing our house in the bad weather. He went and jumped in the car to chase them down. He started the windshield wipers and the rooster successfully jumped over the wiper as they passed by about three or four times. Then he spread his wings, flew off the car and we never saw him again. This probably occurred back about '67 or '68.

 

I was born in 1946 and don't remember them. The reason so many of them died is probably because the kids didn't think about feeding them. Children always want some kind of pet, but they quickly lose interest in it when they find it requires a lot of attention--as well as feeding.

 

A pink rooster? Did he have identity problems? The other roosters try hitting on him?

 

I think you can still find those chicks. Call your local PETA office and ask them where :laugh:

I remember having to do fire drills which weren't so bad, but I hated having to do the tornado drills. The idea of getting on the ground & covering your head was aweful as a little 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grader. Plus when they signaled the tornado drill, there was this aweful sounding buzzer, which kind of spooked me.

I remeber only having three or four channels in the 80's. Of course, when I moved to the Miami area, we must have had about 10 to 15 different stations out there. And we didn't even have cable TV.

As for my activities, I had my Atari 2600. I could go to a yard sale & buy up bunches of games for $.25 to $.50 a piece. If I was well behaved, my dad would take my brother & I to Circus Playhouse. They had TONS of arcade games there. He would give me about three to four dollars in quarters & we must have stayed in there for about two hours just about every Friday night. I remember everytime I would leave the arcade, my wrist would hurt from hitting the buttons & shaking the joystick so hard. Those were some fun times too. If I'm not mistaken, that was probably during the years 1986 to 1989. It only seems like yesterday.

 

Well now.. well now.. I do declare... I don't, I say, I don't remember those days...

 

I'm 44, started school in 69, in a tiny town of propbably not more then 500 including the surrounding area. no air raid drills, I do remember tornado drils though.
