ART GARFUNKEL was arrested last Sunday when police found a marijuana cigarette in his car after pulling him over for driving through a stop sign in upstate New York. The singer was issued a ticket and will have to return to Woodstock Town Court on September 22nd. Garfunkel pled guilty and paid $200 in fines last year for pot possession when a small amount of the drug was found in his jacket . . .

Sad. The active drug in marijuana, THC, is highly addictive and difficult to kick.

America needs to legalize use and possesion. I have never used the stuff myself, nor would I. However, prohibition didn't work with alcohol, and it doesn't work now. Legalize pot and you eliminate the street violence of drug gangs. You eliminate clogging the courts with people who are productive citizens whose only crime is one of self-indulgence.

MP, possession of an ounce or less is a simple infraction. I think that's sufficient for now, though if it were legalized (so long as it were heavily regulated) I'd probably be okay with it. But most drug and violent crimes are not pot-related (it's easy to grow and cheap to produce), they're hard drug related, like cocaine and meth.

I respectfully disagree JohnV THC isn't highly addictive or difficult to kick. I had no problem giving it up and neither have any of the many people I know had a problem giving it up. It really is just a matter of saying no.

Then I suppose we have different experiences. I never touched the stuff, but those of my friends who used it regularly had the hardest time kicking it. One of my friends tried four times and finally had to enter a treatment center to kick it.

Before I met my wife, I was dating someone who was a daily user, who said "I can quite any time I want to, I just don't want to". Sound familiar? Alcoholics say that all the time.

I have no problem with Art smoking pot or, for that matter, any other responsible adult.

My question, what was Art doing in Woodstock? I think he's a bit late for the concert!

Perhaps he scored his weed at Scarbourough Fair (parsley indeed). [IMG]

Sure it sounds familar, I've heard that one myself. But anyone that has indulged in the regular practice of puffing it up can tesify that there are at times long "dry spells" when it just isn't available. Sometimes days sometimes weeks, no one that I know has ever suffered from withdrawl symptoms other than "jonesin for a buzz". I suspect the addiction if there is any is more psychological than physical.

Alcoholics OTOH have been known to drink aftershave during a dry spell without booze to get that buzz they crave.

THC isn't as addictive as alcohol or nicotine, yet alcohol and nicotine are legal. Of course, we all know why alcohol and tobacco are legal: those little stamps on the containers.

If he wasn't high while he was driving, let him go.

Recreational use of pot should be legalized.

Psychological addiction is no less significant, real, damaging, or in need of combating than physical addiction. The addiction issue aside, the psychoactive properties are undisputable, as are the physically damaging results to the body. Also in dispute is the development of cannabis psychosis in long term users, which is a permanemt condition even if the user stops using the drug.
Then if it's all about the "little stamps", then it would be in the government's fiscal favor to legalize mary jane in like manner. The fact that they haven't suggests that it's not all about the little stamp.
But it's not. So he should get his wrist slapped accordingly, which is what happenned.

I intend to try it if I get to a place where it is legal. Being 65 I'll die of something else first.

The sole recreational purpose of smoking pot is to get high. Do you think it's appropriate behavior for a Christian?

I wonder what they do with the farmers in the midwest who have it growing in their back yards.

Under some circumstances, yes. An attitude adjuster created by God. It would be ungrateful to ignore it.

I can find no scripture that suports the idea that God adjusts our attiudes via psycotropic drugs. In fact, the scriptural implication is that such things are mockers and do damage to the temple (our bodies). The only way God adjusts attitudes is by infusing us with the Holy Spirit, not infusing us with THC, alcohol, caffiene, nicotine, heroine, or methanphedamines.

We spend hundreds of dollars (uncompensated) and days of labor killing it with chemicals and mechanical means. It's the most successful plant that grows here. Most farmers here wish they could grow it, instead of fighting it -- it's impossible to eradicate.
