I love going to museums and seeing paintings...any style, any artist. [IMG]
Right now I'm trying to do an in depth
study on v. Gogh. My first plan was to
imitate Starry Night with a spin to it,
but I decided I'm going to study his life
a little more and paint something signifying
the difference between his view of himself
and the success of his art afterward. (Hey, it
makes sense to ME. ;) )
So who's your favorite and why? What's your favorite type/style?
    Gina

    I can draw very well--especialy portraits--but
I cannot paint worth a fillip. I enjoy the impres-
sionists the most, especially Monet, Manet, and
Renoir. I love the way both Monet and Renoir
play with light. Light dances in their creations.
With Manet, I love the realism, the way he seems
to capture the subject's thoughts on canvas.

I wish I could paint--maybe when I am old and
    dressed in purple.

Regarding drawings, who can posssibly not be
impressed, emotional, taken in, totally stunned
by the drawings of da Vinci? 8o) I can study
them for hours. Since I find his drawing out of
reach for myself, both stylistically and in skill,
when I copy another person's style (which is
rare), I copy Aubrey Beardsley. It is lite, fun,
    intricate, delicate, and profound.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Return of the Prodigal Son) I love to paint, but my style is more impressionist, so I love the one who can paint great details.

I have always been a huge fan of Van Gogh every since I heard the song, " Starry, Starry Night " in the 1970's and someone more mature than me explained the song to me.

I have a print of "Starry Night" in my classroom and I have a print of one of his paintings called, "First Steps" in my living room.

It is a beautiful picture of a woman helping her young child to toddle to the garden where her husband is working. She wants him to see the baby takings his first steps. The father has put down his gardening tools and in a moment of joy is holding his arms out for the baby to walk to him.

I love that picture more than just about any thing I know. I guess what I love about it is that the people in the picture are so happy and are totally oblivious to any onlookers.

I have a couple of Monet prints, too. I have a really nice one under my guest bed. It's too big and I don't know what to do with it! [IMG]

I also really like Clemetine Hunter. I have some of her small prints in my kitchen. She was a "primitive artist" from my area of Louisiana. I know that a lot of people don't like primitive art, but, hey, her pictures hang in the Louvre Museum, so there! ;)

    Peace-

My favorite artist is my mother, Nancy Lee.

Her paintings have been on display at Widener University, Philadelphia Community College and several galleries across South Jersey and Delaware and she's currently one of the featured artists in an exhibit by the Cecil County (Md) Arts Council.

My sister and brother-in-law and I are looking into creating a "virtual gallery" on the web for her.

Outside the family, I never really cared for art until I got into Howard Finster.

I have a couple of his prints and a few folk art things from different Appalachian and Cuban artists.

Artemisia Gentileschi is quite possibly my favorite painter. Frida Kahlo comes a close second, even though the two women's styles are incredibly different.

If you like "Native American" art, you might really like Oscar Howe's work. http://www.sdmuseums.org/html/oscar_howe.html
    http://www.cornpalace.org/oscarhowe.html
Oscar Howe (1915-1983), a Yanktonai Sioux, was born on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

A student of art at the Santa Fe Indian School, he received his B.A. degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD and his M.F.A. from the University of Oklahoma. A recipient of numerous national art awards, he held many honors, including Artist Laureate of South Dakota. A member of the art faculty and artist-in-residence at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion since 1957, he was accorded the status of Professor Emeritus of Art in 1980. He succumbed to Parkinson's Desease in October, 1983.

As a modern artist, Howe created a linear abstract design concept which utilizes the formal elements of line, color and space to interpret his heritage.

The Oscar Howe Gallery is dedicated to the artist and features a major collection of his original casein paintings.

Have you ever noticed in many of the masterpieces that they seem to have a religious flavor?
Who is not moved by Michelangelos David, Pieta or the Sistine Chapel?... I know as a christian I surely am. What about the various religious art icons that were carried?
I'm not an artist like some on this board are but I've studied the history of art and it is amazing to me of the religious themes on many of these paintings. I guess that tells us who we are and that we look to our creator no matter what age of the world we were born in.
Our art reflects the dealings of mankind with his God, Creator, and Savior and his dealing with us. Are not many Family Bibles full of religious art I know mine is. I have the life of Christ depicted in art from the Annunciation to the Resurrection and Ascension to go along with the written word of God.
Who are the great christian artist of today and where are their sites? I've seen some christian art but who are the known ones today? Do we still see them painting with the same theme or is it somewhat different and why?
I mentioned a site for Bro. Curtis to look at and would like all you to do the same. Look at the painting called Christ Carrying The Cross not just at the suffering Christ but at the face of humanity in all its forms!... What was the artist trying to say?... Brother Glen [IMG]

I don't like it Brother Glen. It scares me.
Then again I don't think I'm supposed to like it. [IMG] LOL
Probably the most moving one on there for me is Ship of Fool. Don't like that one either, but I understand them, all too clear.
Amazing talent at getting his thoughts across! I'm impressed.

A David fan? I didn't know there were any left. I agree it's a powerful painting.

    Bro. Glen:

I think the Pieta may be the greatest piece of religious art ever created. Or art of any kind.

    Gina-

Thanks so much for that link!! I forget that the song was called "Vincent" and not "Starry, Starry Night".

Gosh, I haven't heard that song in years! I love it. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I like sculpture. My favorite sculptor is Bruno Lucchesi, a contemporary artist who combines renaissance and deco styles. A close runner-up is the deco sculptor Demetre Chiparus. For 2D art and design, I also favor deco.

I used to make art professors shudder when I'd announce that I like surrealism...I suppose they thought it was rather sophomoric of me...silly elitists!

I have developed a strong taste for Van Gogh, and I love reading anything about his life. I have so many favorites because he used such vibrant colors. I love the movement of "Starry Night," but I don't particularly like the colors he chose for "Sunflowers."

Scarlett O., I found a desktop theme that includes the "Starry Night" wallpaper, icons, cursors and clips of the song you love so much. The only problem is that parts of the song have to play in their entirity before you can shut down...it actually gets old.

I'll look around and try to find a link. It is a beautiful theme.
