Ask Jeeves v Google

    I have always used Google, yet in recent times I have switched over to Ask Jeeves, Google does search more pages, yet it is my experience that Google also returns more dead links to nowhere.

    Interested in your thoughts on the two search engines, and the differences you find?

    I actually like Google better. Several months ago I tried Jeeves and it would return blank pages. I don't know if they were experiencing problems at that time or not. I may give ole Jeeves another chance depending on what others say here.

    Ever try metacrawler, it uses sevaral different seach engines at one time...including the two listed here.

    I am a hardy Google fan. I believe they do the best job to keeping the results constient with what you're looking for.

    As an FYI for those not familar, there are tricks to any search engine. I will give you a couple I use in Google.


    If you're looking for something specific, then put that in quotations.

    Example:

    Search for Merry Hill Baptist Church

    would bring up anything with either Merry, Hill, Baptist or Church in it.

    Now, if you

    Search for: "Merry Hill" Baptist church

    would only bring up things that have Merry Hill together like that.

    You can also use the subtract sign to delete unwanted results.

    Example:

    Search for Cheap Loans

    would bring up home loans, credit cards loans etc, all kinds of loans.

    Suppose I want a loan, but I don't want a second mortage, or any home loan.

    Search for Cheap Loans -mortage

    would bring up anything that is a loan but not anything with mortage in the search phrase.


    Now this isn't perfect, but it does help a great deal when searching for things.

    This can be used on most searches, including searchs on places such as eBay. I use it alot when I am search for parts for my Jeep Cherokee, which isn't a Grand Cherokee, so I seach for Jeep Cherokee -Grand and if deletes any listings with Grand in it.

    I notice that Ask Jeeves has a version for kids, depending on how strictly those links are controlled that could be good?

    I just tried the Metacrawler website. I think it's good, but I don't know if I'll use it over Google.
