    "'Atlas' pic mapped

    By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Ayn Rand's most ambitious novel may finally be brought to the bigscreen after years of false starts.
Lionsgate has picked up worldwide distribution rights to "Atlas Shrugged" from Howard and Karen Baldwin ("Ray"), who will produce with John Aglialoro.

As for stars, book provides an ideal role for an actress in lead character Dagny Taggart, so it's not a stretch to assume Rand enthusiast Angelina Jolie's name has been brought up. Brad Pitt, also a fan, is rumored to be among the names suggested for lead male character John Galt.

"Atlas Shrugged," which runs more than 1,100 pages, has faced a lengthy and circuitous journey to a film adaptation.

The Russian-born author's seminal tome, published in 1957, revolves around the economic collapse of the U.S. sometime in the future and espouses her individualistic philosophy of objectivism. The violent, apocalyptic ending has always posed a challenge but could prove especially so in the post-9/11 climate.

Howard Baldwin said some people have pigeonholed "Atlas" as better suited for a miniseries. That's why he sometimes pondered turning "Atlas" into two movies. In fact, a two-part script penned by James V. Hart ("Contact") for the Baldwins envisions "Atlas" as two pics, although it's likely to be reworked."

I'm curious about why you posted this. To recommend it or to warn us? Maybe neither.

I just attended a conference at which one speaker spoke of Ayn Rand and her "greed is good" philosophy as the intellectual underpinnings of the Reagan revolution and a good deal of the Californiated megachurch approach. Now that ought to spin some replies!

Read atlas shrugged years ago. It seems that it would be immpossible to make into a movie because it has alot of looooooonnnnnggggg dialouge and monolouge in it. A movie would never do the book justice. I am quite surprised that Hollywood and that socialist bunch would even want to touch this project. Ayn Rand was an ardent capitalist, although Jolie and Pitt would fit the selfish part.

YEs, one speach of John Galt is
    120 pages long :(

BTW, Fountainhead the movie didn't do
Fountainhead the book any justice at all.

Also BTW, Randism is a failed religion :(
It never got off the ground.

and again BTW, I've read the book TWICE,
    all of it.

Executive compensation is a matter for the shareholders of a corporation to determine.

It saddens me to see Christians being jealous of those whose have been successful in their careers and have been rewarded for it.

I thought it was the board which decided and the shareholders rubberstamped. Since the executives sit on each other's boards, there is a bit of an incentive not to be bothered by excessive salaries.

Then, too, do you want your company to have the cheapest management? I do, but too many people mistake price for value.

It's not jealousy, for me anyway; it's resentment and a sense of injustice.

The shareholders pass judgment on the decisions of the board of directors.

Did you resent the Texas Rangers paying Alex Rodriguez $25 million a year to do nothing more than merely play baseball, which isn't a vital product for the American people?

How is injustice involved? How a corporation spends its revenue in a legal manner is no one's business other than that of the shareholders.

That is almost never the case. Salaries are usually set by the Board of Directors, not the shareholders.

Alas: it amazes me that this claim of "jealousy" is the usual retort for any criticism about excess. I have heard this stated (not by you) about Rush Limbaugh or the Fox News Channel[anyone who accuses either of lying or notes a complete lack of credibility is immediately branded as jealous of their success] as well as any corporation with no-bid contracts. I did not see anyone note their jealousy, and I certainly didn't read anyone make the statement either directly or indirectly.

    Just an observation, nothing more,

And who elects the Board of Directors? The shareholders.

Do you really think that the shareholders wield any power at companies anymore?

None. You don't have to attend the meeting in order to vote.
