Attitude of Gratitude

    In the USA - Thursday is "Thanksgiving Day".
    It is supposed to be a time when we reflect on what we are thankful for and celebrate those things.

    Everyday of our lives there are people we appreciate, but we don't necessarily pat them on the back and let them know. Even if we say it sometimes, it is really nice to put it into writing or to make a special effort to say it.

    I propose that you take a moment to make a phone call, write an email, or write a regular mail note to people like the following - telling them, "I wanted you to know that I'm thankful for you, and for what you do in my life."

    Your Pastor.
    Your Music Minister.
    Your Youth Minister.
    Your Sunday School Teacher.
    Head of the Deacons.
    Church secretary.
    Church janitor.
    Your spouse.
    Your son.
    Your daughter.
    Your sibling.
    Your parent.
    Your employer.

    I am sure there are many, many others.

    So true! For six weeks before Thanksgiving, our pastor had us all do something different each week to show appreciation to someone--a different little paper in the bulletin each week giving us a suggestion as to who to thank for the week. First week, someone who impacted your life for Christ. Second week, family member. Third week, neighbor, etc., etc. It was great, because sometimes we need a little reminder to remember to say thanks.

    This is a good idea, but we should remember to tell them that we are thankful all year, not just at thanksgiving. We get so busy with out every day activities that we forget to tell others how important they are to us.

    I always thought churches should have "support your church staff" committees. (We do have a prayer committee for the pastor, but that's not what I mean.) I think they need to know they are loved and admired.

    TexasSky, I was in the 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School classroom and noticed that they have a prayer board and they had named all the staff members and pray for them each Sunday. I was really touched to see my name there and that these children were praying for me. Our church is a praying church and they do support their staff.

    That is wonderful.
    Our church is supportive of the staff too, but I've been in churches where the congregation was quick to criticize and slow to praise.
