Auto-tune and modern recorded music

You have hit on one of th problem with the modern "worship performance" mentality. Everyone wants to sing to the band on tape and sound just like the processed voices of their singing heroes. We would be far better off to skip the karaoke worship.

 

I agree with you...except that it's not strictly confined to young people. I've heard two or three southern gospel songs in which a fella with no pipes tried to emulate one who had great pipes.

Nothing like having a back-up choir of howling dogs.

I cringe every time I am in a service and someone sings to a back up track.

Learn to play a guitar or keyboard and make REAL music, for crying out loud! I'll be ALL YOU, not you plus a band, string section, and back up singers who arent really there.

Amen to all the previous posts. If we are going to sing to tracks, why not just play a track with singing? If the singer can't play an instrument or find someone who can, why not go acappela? If we're going to listen to recorded music and singing, why bother with live preaching? If we're going to listen to recorded preaching why not stay home? For fellowship we can just do instant messaging and emoticons.

Great point. There are probably scores and scores of great messages by some of the great preachers and teachers of all time on tape or CD's.

When its time for the message just cue up message #3,457 and everyone looks at the empty podium as the taped message plays. Or, the pastor can stand and agree with it. Every once in a while he chimes in with.............. "great point!.............."wonderful'!............AMEN!!!..........excellant!

I wonder just how many people would be interested in singing for the church if all singers, from the choir down to a solo, were placed in the back? You know, some churches do that actually.

 

Interesting. I've never seen, or even heard of that. What is the reason for having them in the back?

I think for most of church history, the musicians were at the back, including the organ. It is commonly found in the rear balcony of many older churches and the choirs would sit up there and soloist would sing from there.

It was, at least in part, not to draw attention to the singer himself. How refreshing that would be. Sometimes, watching Christian performers sing reminds me that there are certain things that are just not fit for public consumption.

And you must wonder (as someone already has) if you were told that you couldn't use a background tape, had to stand in the rear balcony, and could not hold your mike, would you still sing? Many would not. How do I know? When i was a music director, I had someone refuse to sing because I told them that our special music was to be done behind the pulpit using the pulpit mike.

 

Probably easier to "preach to the choir". :laugh:

 

In WV, we still have a few of the older mountain churches that are set up this way. I once visited a church that was thrilled that I could play the organ, as they had no one play it for many years. Imagine my surprise then they led me to the back of the sanctuary and seated me at an old-fashioned pump organ!

 

You know, when I imagine myself sitting in a church, with just the empty podium in front of me and maybe a wooden cross on the wall like lots of churches have, and then hearing the worship music being played...but coming from behind me...its seems like it would be kind of refreshing! Sort of like the music is wafting down from heaven itself.

And as a musician who plays in church it seems like it would be kind of neat, knowing that nobody is looking at us, but rather meditating on God alone...which is what we want anyway.

I realize of course that I'm opening myself up to public scrutiny, but I sing with recorded tracks, acappella, and I accompany myself on the piano most of the time. It depends on the song, the point in the service that its used, and the theme or message of the song.
