    First impression - Awesome!

    A MUST SEE!

Something for everyone, a chick flick with guns and bombs.

    Definitely worth the price!

    3 D effects are amazing.

See, I've heard about the great promotion of panthiesm in this movie. What do you think about that part of it?

For a Sci-Fi fan such as I, I'm able to suspend my reality to enjoy the story.

I'm still working though how to perceive the story through a Christian worldview.

It would promote pantheism if the setting were on earth,
...but we're dealing with extra-terrestrials on a distant planet called Pandora.

Who knows what wonders God might perform on other worlds.

My wife liked it so much she has seen it twice. The 2nd time she took me. It's whole basis is pantheistic. It's also very pro towards the environmental wacko's. The mercenaries (all blood thirsty ex marines) were there to strip off the natural resources of that world because man had destroyed this world.

I liked it but thought it was like "Dances with Wolves" with aliens.

My wife hated it! Special effects were awsome, however, she stated that its another love the earth goddess movie. Humans are bad; mother nature is good. If humans were not extant the earth would be better off. I think she would have though the movie might be improved if the Naa'vi sacrificed their own and humans. Had blood letting cerimonies. Were cannabalistic. And the humans were able to take over and bring the Naa'vi to a better world were disease were reduced and child birth rates increased.

    That's my wife for you.

The criticisms about pantheism and environmentalism are somewhat overexaggerated. The movie was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, and I can't understate that enough. The theme is similar to Dances With Wolves (another excellent movie), with a splash of "Little Mermaid" thrown in. The CGI is top notch. And about Sigourney Weaver, does she age? She's 60 years old now, and she still looks absolutely beautiful. The best performance was Zoe Saldana. I absolutely loved the fact that the lead roles are all relative unknowns, or at least B list performers.

There was a line with the Main character (from terminator salvation) praying to the planet and informing the planet to Check out the mind of his friend and see what the humans had done to their "mother" which was to destroy our environment.

It's fiction. It's a James Cameron movie, not an Oliver Stone movie. Oh wait, if it were an Oliver Stone movie, it would still be fiction. Nevermind.

    fiction can teach values.

Ie Worship the Earth Mother and join earth first because humans are bad and the earth needs to be rid of them.

I see a rise in paganism and this movie though fantastic visually does preach its views.

The point would be valid only if it were a realy deity. Was I the only one who got that the object of the Na Vi's worship were some life form that they simply didn't comprehend, and not a real deity? As for any environmental message, the only environmental message is that you can't simply take and use for yoru own pleasure that which isn't yours in the first place (a la, Dances With Wolves). I don't want to get any more detailed, for fear of giving too much of the story away.

Perhaps my frustration comes from the fact that Christians who love sci-fi are way too often targets of other christians who constantly pontificate their doctrinal problems with sci-fi. Heck, there were threads upon threads upon threads about the evils of Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. There was one guy years ago blasting the Star Wars and Star Trek films. If these folks are so insecure in theri faith that they can't enjoy the sfi fi genre, then let 'em go wallow in teheir own security elsewhere, and leave us to enjoy the art of the film.

You've never heard of Magna Mater? Which is what the Naa'vi in their way were worshiping though to be fair there was a biological connection to the planet which is stupid.

I love science fiction. I love it a lot. It plays with many ideals and consepts that would never cross in ordinary circumstances. But I also see it for what it is. I love fantasy and sci fi. And I can enjoy both very much but I know when I'm being preached to.

Yes, I've got one growing in my yard. It's a little bigger than the Beefsteak 'Mater.
I'm glad you enjoy scifi as much as I do, but I still think you're reading a little too much into this movie. But the very fact that we can think of a move as "best" or "better" denotes that views on movies is highly subjective to begin with, which I'm okay with.

On a sidenote, I wonder how seriosly Avatar will be considered for Best Picture. Ever since Return of the King, scifi films are no longer considered categorically ineligible. I'd rather JJ Abrams' Star Trek got that credit, but that's just showing my geek bias.
